OnlinePoker Bankroll Management Tips

One of the more overlooked aspects of poker play may be bankroll management, even though hundreds of poker articles have been written about it. It may seem that if you are a good player, you do not need to worry too much about this issue. It is important to remember that poker is a highly volatile game, subject to big swings of short-term luck. This is especially true in games like no-limit Texas hold’em, where one unlucky card can cost a player his entire stack of chips.

Poker Bankroll Management Strategy 1: 10 Percent Rule

When playing poker, whether it’s a tournament or cash game, try not to commit more than 10 percent of your total bankroll to any one session. These calculations are so simple that you won’t even need a free poker calculator to do them. In a no-limit game, you may not want to put the whole 10 percent on the table at once, but rather split it into three or four buys. Playing this way will protect your bankroll and prevent you from playing at stakes too high for your current financial status.

Poker Bankroll Management Strategy 2: Stop Loss

When playing poker online
cash games, you should set a stop loss number. When you lose this amount, you quit the session. This will be true whether you are up $2,000 or down $500. Anytime during the session where you go down the amount of your stop loss, it’s time to quit.

Poker Bankroll Management Strategy 3: Keep Finances Separate

Don’t combine your poker money with the money you need to pay actual expenses. This will often cause you to lose more than you should. If your poker bankroll is busted, have the discipline to wait until you can rebuild it before you play again.
