Rams Quit, Get Slaughtered in Atlanta

I have spent most of this season trying to defend the St. Louis Rams and their play, or lack there of. I have no excuse for what happened on Saturday night and I’m not going to try and come up with one. I know that I saw a team that gave up. Yes, the Falcons’ strengths were the Rams weaknesses, but after halftime it seemed to me that many of the St. Louis players had stayed in the locker room and sent a shell of a team back onto the turf of the Georgia Dome.

As of right now I really don’t have much more to say. This team has been a big let down all season. True I didn’t expect them to win the Super Bowl, but I did expect them to give 100 % in every game. Sadly they only did that about 50 % of the time this season. Here’s hoping that next year will offer Rams fans more excitement and useful things to talk about.

Wonder What’s Next

Yeah, it’s time for the off-season. Maybe the front office can dump some of this dead weight and put a team on the field next season that wants to win and wants to try playing their best in every game. Expect many changes as the Rams try to juggle the Salary Cap and improve the team. I personally expect St. Louis to try to restructure Marshall Faulks contract as he will see less and less playing time over the next few years as Steven Jackson continues to blossom as a big, powerful NFL running back.

This Week’s Playoff Predictions

AFC

New England Patriots 17

At Pittsburgh Steelers 20

NFC

Atlanta Falcons 13

At Philadelphia Eagles 17

No matter who wins out of the AFC I am picking that team to win the Super Bowl.

I’d like to close this season out by saying thanks to all that have read and offered feedback. Keep those emails coming in. This page will still get updated, but probably not every week. I think it’ll be every two weeks or as news breaks concerning the Rams. Stay posted to see what’s going on with the St. Louis Rams. Also, keep an eye on the front page for the most comprehensive Rams coverage on the Internet.

Rams Beat Seahawks, Set Sights on Falcons

The third time wasn’t a charm for the Seattle Seahawks when it came to beating the St. Louis Rams. St. Louis beat the Seahawks for the third time this year and second time in Seattle with a 27-20 victory. In doing so, the Rams became the first team in NFL history to win a playoff game after finishing the season with an 8-8 record. St. Louis etched out the victory when Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck failed to connect with WR Bobby Engram on 4th and 4 from the Rams 5-yard line with 27 seconds left in the game.

The Rams have a three game winning streak heading into Sunday’s Divisional Playoff game in Atlanta, where they will face the Falcons in a rematch of week 2. In that meeting the Falcons beat the Rams 34-17. “The last three weeks this is a different team than the previous 14 weeks,” Mike Martz said.

“Fortunately, we’ve been making plays the last three weeks when we’ve had to, and that wasn’t the case all year.” QB Marc Bulger said after completing 18 of his 32 passes for 313 yards with 2 touchdown passes and 1 interception.

The Rams have stepped their play up a few notches the past three weeks. After losing to the Arizona Cardinals, St. Louis had backed themselves into a corner and needed to win games against the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Jets to get their shot at the NFL postseason playoffs. Luckily for the Rams, Bulger returned from his shoulder injury just in time help create a spark that the team seriously needed.

Wonder What’s Next

Dome sweet dome, sort of....

Even if the Georgia Dome isn't the Edward Jones Dome at least the Rams can be indoors and on turf where they play best. Atlanta lead the league in sacks, punt return yards and takeaways, all of which the Rams are horrible at. They give up too many sacks and they where last in punt return coverage and turnovers. Then mention the fact that Michael Vick's favorite receiver is his tight end Alge Crumpler and think about how poorly the Rams have been at covering TE's this season. This game could be a thriller or Atlanta could smoke the Rams like holiday meat. Here's hoping that St. Louis can keep the dream alive and pull out another impressive victory to keep their championship hopes alive.

Rams Down Jets, Sputter Into Playoffs

With an amazing 32-29 overtime win against the New York Jets, the St. Louis Rams made it into the NFC playoffs. Kicker Jeff Wilkins connected on a 31-yard field goal to seal the deal, as the Rams clinched their fourth post-season birth in five seasons under head coach Mike Martz. Despite finishing the year with a disappointing 8-8 record, the players and coaches could hardly contain their emotions as they expressed hopes and plans for the NFL’s second season.

The offense had a much needed breakout game against the Jets. Rams QB Marc Bulger went 29-39 for 450 yards with 2 touchdown passes and WR Torry Holt had seven catches for 116 yards which put him over 1,300 yards receiving for the fifth straight year, which set a new NFL record. RB’s Marshall Faulk and Steven Jackson combined for just 47 rushing yards, but the defense helped out tremendously by sacking Jets’ QB Chad Pennington six times.

Wonder What’s Next

Mike and Mike duel again. No, not Mike and Mike from ESPN Radio, but Mike Martz and Mike Holmgren. The Rams travel to that far away land of clouds and rain, Seattle to take on the Seahawks for the third time this season. The Rams have won the other two meetings this year. A hopeful and interesting statistic for Rams fans is that ten out of the fifteen times a team has won both regular season games against a playoff opponent they have went on to win the third game as well.

Email of the Week

J Sohn,

Dude, do you even like the Rams? It seems like you pick them to lose every week.

Dustin

Dustin,

I like the Rams and I don’t pick them to lose every week. Honestly, I think everytime I pick them to win they lose and when I pick them to lose they win. I try to objective when I write about the team. I think it is fair to them, the fans and the readers. If you want to see writers who don’t appear to like the Rams I recommend reading the St. Louis Post-Dispatch or visiting http://www.stltoday.com. Thanks for writing in Dustin.

Oh and By the Way

Congratulations to the USC Trojans on winning the BCS National Championship. I think it would have been great to see Auburn and Utah play against each other with the winner of that game going on to face the winner of the USC and Oklahoma game. I think USC is the best college football team this year, but it stinks to have three unbeaten teams and one National Champion. Oh, well, just another argument about how the BCS works.
