 Draft Picks
Kentwan Balmer
While a wide receiver would have also made sense here, you can also get one later in the draft. With Bryant Young retired, Balmer helps an aging defensive line.
Chilo Rachal
When Rachal gets a hand on somebody they don't get free or make a play. That's what you want out of a guard. He came out a year early and could take a little time to develop and should get that with a young team.
Reggie Smith
Smith is a guy that can play both corner and safety, though the 49ers will likely play him at the nickel position to start out his career. What he lacks in speed, he makes up for with his tackling and ability to turn players inside towards the linebackers.
Cody Wallace
Wallace is a good, dependable player with football intelligence who can play in the power game. He was rated as the best center available and made a lot of starts in college.
Josh Morgan
Morgan is a very fast receiver, but a tough evaluation because Virginia Tech doesn't throw the ball a lot. Morgan is a solid special teams player who will contribute at the pro level.
Larry Grant
Grant's not very big, but has decent speed. He's an outside linebacker and was relatively productive for the Buckeyes

San Francisco 49ers 2008 NFL Preview

Head coach Mike Nolan finds himself on the hot seat heading into the 2008 season, and rightfully so after posting a very modest 16-32 record over three seasons. Without a marked improvement this year, he’ll probably be seeking employment during the next offseason. And there’s not much room to go anywhere but up after ranking near the bottom of the league on both sides of the ball.

Offense: Martz was brought in to turn around the offense and so far that has meant the benching of the 49ers QBOTF Alex Smith. J.T. O'Sullivan knows the offense and used that to his best advantage as the journeyman qb won the starting position outright. I don't think that is exactly a big vote of confidence for the fans though as much as a damning of Alex Smith and his ability to learn the complicated Martz offense. And if the very smart Alex Smith cant learn it it must be really complicated. Alex Smith is entering territory only seen before by the likes of Ryan Leaf. It is very hard to put all the blame on Smith though as Mike Martz is the fourth different offensive coordinator that Alex Smith has had in his four-year career. Basically we expect to see a horrible learning curve the first half of the year and some slight improvement in the second half. To pull the gun on Smith this early signifies a very bad future for this offense. We would cover the running game as well, but really what is the point, remember that Martz is the offensive coordinator here.

Defense: Patrick Willis might be a once in a lifetime talent. At the very least, he’s the top player in Mike Nolan’s 3-4 defense. Willis led the league with 174 tackles as a rookie last season. He is a terrorizing blitzer, evidenced by his four sacks and 6.5 tackles for a loss.

Overall: With the benching of quarterback Alex Smith, the chemistry issues that are boiling beneath the surface of the locker room could erupt unless there is some immediate success. Considering how questionable the coaching staff is, and how poor a fit Mike Martz’s scheme is for this offense at the moment, disaster seems like the only possible outcome.

Projected Record: 4-12 Last in NFC West
