There were not a lot of needs for a team that has won 25 games over the last two
season. Running back Jacob Hester could replace Michael Turner, who left in free
agency for Atlanta. The Chargers led the NFL in interceptions last season, but
Antoine Cason will provide some depth at cornerback. The offensive and defensive
lines could have used some depth, but the Chargers didn't draft a lineman until
taking offensive tackle Corey Clark in the seventh round
The Chargers go with a cornerback, looking to replace Drayton Florence, who left
in free agency. Cason was one of the late risers of the draft. Teams began to
appreciate how much talent he had after some impressive workouts. Among the
corners in this draft, Cason is ready to make a significant impact as a rookie.
Round 3, Pick 6 (69)
(From Raiders through Patriots) Jacob Hester FB 5'11" 230 LSU
The Chargers get a winner in Hester, who is a strong dual back who can play both
fullback and tailback. He's an inside runner and good around the goal line. With
Michael Turner gone to Atlanta, Hester will be a good third down option as well
as an excellent special teams player.
Round 5, Pick 31 (166)
(Compensatory selection) Marcus Thomas RB 6'2" 215 Texas-El Paso
Thomas is not a burner, but has good enough speed to compliment his size. With
Michael Turner gone as a free agent, Thomas could be asked to spell LaDainian
Tomlinson on occasion.
Round 6, Pick 26 (192) DeJuan Tribble CB 5'9" 190 Boston College
Tribble was a major part of Boston College's impressive 2007 season and
displayed some solid coverage skills.
Round 7, Pick 27 (234) Corey Clark OT 6'6" 315 Texas A&M
Clark has good size and decent speed. He has long arms with a chance to compete
for a low-end roster spot or a place on the practice squad.
San Diego Chargers 2008 NFL Preview
The Chargers are by far the most complete and balanced team in the
AFC West. That doesnt mean there aren't many questions, health being
the chief concern. Philip Rivers health is in question although he
appears to be recovered from offseason knee surgery, however more
important is the health of Shawne Merriman who has said everything
from his career being in danger, to he is going to play out the year
this year. Ladainian Tomlinson returns as the
anchor of the offense, and they have arguably the best TE in the
league in Antonio Gates and have added Chris Chambers as a threat.
So the offense should remain prolific. The big question is what if
they do lose defensive superstar Merriman
Offense: The Chargers are built around Ladainian Tomlinson, so it is
not saying too much to say that the offense will go as far as LT's legs
will carry them. Teams will stack the box and dare Rivers to throw, and
he now has a full complement of receivers to throw to. The offseason
acquisition of Chris Chambers from Miami and the development of
speedster Darren Sproles and Vincent Jacksons more prominent role should
help balance things out. Look for a top ten offense again.
Defense: The Chargers specialize in placing pressure on the
quarterback and that should continue with the only question being what
happens with Merriman.
Overall: The big questions are how well Rivers bounces back
from knee surgery and continues to develop, and Merriman's health.
The Chargers have to find some balance and bring that 26th ranked
passing attack into respectability to make some noise in the playoffs.
Getting there will be no problem.
