Swarming defense lifts Eagles over Steelers 15-6

Ben Roethlisberger had a bandage on his throwing hand and winced while dressing. Considering he was persistently chased, battered and stomped by the Philadelphia Eagles, the damage could’ve been worse.

With Brian Westbrook sidelined and Donovan McNabb hurting, the Eagles did it with defense.

A swarming D had nine sacks, forced a safety and got three turnovers, and Philadelphia beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 15-6 Sunday.

“We can’t thank them enough for how they played,” running back Correll Buckhalter said. “They bailed us out.”

Just six days earlier, Philly’s defense couldn’t stop anybody. The Dallas Cowboys moved the ball at will in a 41-37 victory last Monday.

But this unit was rejuvenated against the Steelers (2-1)...

Preview:

The Philadelphia Eagles know the difference a healthy Donovan McNabb makes to their offense. The Pittsburgh Steelers are hoping a banged-up Ben Roethlisberger isn't going to hinder theirs.

Nursing a sprained shoulder, Roethlisberger tries to lead the Steelers to their first win in Philadelphia in 43 years on Sunday against McNabb and the high-scoring Eagles.

Roethlisberger didn't have to work too hard in Pittsburgh's season-opening 38-17 win over Houston, where he completed 13-of-14 passes for 137 yards and a pair of touchdowns in three quarters of action. However, he appeared shaken after landing on his shoulder during a sack...more

Inside the Game Plans: Notable:
STEELERS: Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger put the issue of his sore right shoulder to rest this week by fully participating in practice again Thursday and declaring himself fit and ready to go against Philadelphia on Sunday.

"I feel better," Roethlisberger said Wednesday. "Obviously it's sore. Who in here isn't sore who plays this game? It's definitely better and we're making progress."

The issue came to a head Sunday when NBC-TV reported that Roethlisberger had a separated right shoulder. The network said the quarterback gave them the information. Coach Mike Tomlin denied it, saying it was merely "sore" but then admitting it was an AC sprain... FULL STORY

EAGLES: If the Eagles expect to beat the 2-0 Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday, they need get better pressure on quarterback Ben Roethlisberger than they got on the Cowboys' Tony Romo Monday night.

The Eagles, who sacked Romo four times and intercepted him three times in a 10-6 win last December, were unable to get any consistent pressure on the Cowboys quarterback in their 41-37 Week 2 loss. They didn't sack Romo once and seldom even managed to make him hurry a throw as he sliced and diced them for 312 yards and three touchdowns...FULL STORY

Pittsburgh beat the Browns, 10-6, on Sunday night and improved to 2-0 for the second straight and third time in the last four seasons. The Steelers are now 6-1 vs. divisional opponents since the beginning of 2007

Philadelphia put 37 points on the board against Dallas on Monday night and lost, falling to 1-1 on the season and snapping a 4-game win streak dating to December 2007. Monday's contest marked the 81st time that the Eagles have scored 37 or more points in franchise history and the first time they have lost a game when scoring that many
