Gore, O’Sullivan lead Niners past lowly
Lions 31-13
If last season’s offensively inept 49ers had somehow managed to
get to the Detroit 1, they would have kicked an easy field goal on fourth down
without hesitation.
Mike Martz’s 49ers coolly called a timeout, then scored the decisive touchdown
with a beautiful end-around run by kick returner Allen Rossum, of all people.
The Lions thought Martz was part of their problem last year. So far in San
Francisco, coach Mike Nolan’s offensive mastermind has been the solution for the
Niners’ years of awfulness.
Frank Gore rushed for 130 yards and a touchdown, and Martz’s new offense
methodically chewed up his former team’s defense in the 49ers’ 31-13 victory
over Detroit on Sunday...more

The Detroit Lions
weren't satisfied with
Mike Martz during his
two-year tenure as the
team's offensive
coordinator. The San
Francisco 49ers,
however, have nothing
but good things to say
about him after two
games.
Martz and the new-look
49ers look to continue
their rebuilding on
Sunday when they host
the Lions, who haven't
had much luck in their
first season without the
offensive mastermind.
After a seven-year stint
with the St. Louis Rams
that included a Super
Bowl win as the
offensive coordinator
and another Super Bowl
appearance as the head
coach, Martz was hired
to revamp Detroit's
offense in 2006. The
club went 3-13 in his
first season, then
collapsed after a 6-2
start last year to
finish 7-9...more
Inside the Game Plans:
Notable:
LIONS: The
Lions cannot fall behind, 21-0, for the third consecutive game. They
came into the season planning to run the ball more, control the clock
and keep their defense off the field. But they have been unable to do
that playing from behind. Now that Mike Martz is the 49ers' offensive
coordinator, the Lions must attack him the way the other teams attacked
them the last two years - leading to Martz's firing. They must make him
one-dimensional and sack the quarterback...

49ERS:
The Lions parted ways with offensive coordinator Mike Martz in hopes of
becoming more of a running team to control the clock. But the Lions
still have not shown much of an ability to run the ball. Kevin Smith has
88 of the team's 111 yards through two games. The 49ers need to do a
better job against the run, as they've surrendered a 100-yard rusher in
each of the first two games. But, again, their focus would figure to be
on the Lions' passing attack.
QB Jon Kitna has thrown for 538 yards in two games, and the Lions
have some explosive wideouts, Calvin Johnson and Roy Williams. Johnson
is poised for a huge season. He already has 13 catches and 236 yards and
two touchdowns in two games. The 49ers employed a nickel defense
exclusively in their overtime victory at Seattle last week. Generally,
they run a hybrid 3-4 defense...FULL
