Fourth-quarter pick spurs Redskins to
24-17 victory over Cardinals
Even Leigh Torrence wasn’t sure how he deflected the ball. He
got a piece of it with his hand, he thought. Maybe it then bounced off his
helmet.
What really matters is that he was there, swinging the tide Sunday with a solid
defensive play in the fourth quarter. He kept pace with Steve Breaston deep over
the middle and caused Kurt Warner’s pass to bounce high into the air and into
the hands of diving teammate Carlos Rogers.
“I knew I was going to deflect it,” Torrence said, “but I wasn’t sure how.”
Rogers got to his feet and took off, running 42 yards to the 15-yard line. Two
plays later, Santana Moss scored on a 17-yard receiver screen with 12:10
remaining, giving the Washington Redskins a 24-17 victory over the Arizona
Cardinals...

The Arizona Cardinals
aren't ready to
celebrate their
undefeated start because
they're only two games
into the season. The
statistics, however,
indicate that the
long-suffering franchise
has reason to be
optimistic.
After winning their
first two games for the
first time in 17 years,
the Cardinals look to
make it their first 3-0
start since 1974 as they
visit the Washington
Redskins on Sunday in
the first of consecutive
games on the East Coast.
Arizona opened the
season with a 23-13 win
at San Francisco, then
dominated Miami in a
31-10 victory last
Sunday. The Cardinals,
though, insist they're
not letting their early
success go to their
heads...more
Inside the Game Plans:
Notable:
CARDINALS: The
Cardinals have won their games using varying styles. In the opener, they
relied on the run, and the defense blitzed 49ers quarterback J.T.
O'Sullivan. That versatility should serve them well the rest of the
season. Defensively, few coordinators change game plans so drastically
week to week as Clancy Pendergast. He has a lot of options with a roster
full of versatile players. The same is true on offense. Whisenhunt likes
to use varied formations and personnel groups...FULL

REDSKINS:
Washington's offense took a quantum leap last week against New Orleans,
rocketing from 209 yards, 11 first downs and seven points against the
Giants to 455 yards, 25 first downs and 29 points. Arizona has played
surprisingly good defense so far, albeit against San Francisco and
Miami, but look for Redskins coach Jim Zorn to attack with the pass
first. That means lots of balls should be heading to WRs Santana Moss
and Antwaan Randle El and TE Chris Cooley with some handoff to RB
Clinton Portis mixed in to keep the Cardinals honest...FULL
