With Vince Young not even with the team,
the Tennessee Titans ended a troubling and confusing week by winning in a
breeze.
Backup quarterback Kerry Collins threw low, tight passes that stayed on
track in Cincinnati's wind-tunnel of a stadium Sunday, setting up a 24-7 victory
that kept the Tennessee Titans unbeaten and brought them a little relief at the
end of a trying week...more
Aaron Rodgers had Motor City flashbacks, watching the Green Bay Packers blow a
big lead against the Detroit Lions.
There was a major difference: Rodgers was playing and Brett Favre was elsewhere.
Rodgers threw three touchdown passes in the first four drives of his second
start, helping Green Bay build a big lead it needed in a 48-25 win over the
Detroit Lions on Sunday...more
If Lane Kiffin does get fired by the Oakland Raiders, he might want to apply for
employment in Kansas City.
Amid escalating reports that Kiffin was in trouble
with owner Al Davis and could be dismissed almost any time, the Raiders rushed
for 300 yards Sunday and handed their harried young coach a 23-8 victory over
the mistake-prone Chiefs. Kiffin has only five wins in 18 games with the Silver
and Black, but two have been at Kansas City's expense...more
Justin Tuck swatted Marc Bulger's pass out of the air, plucked it from his
shoulder pad, and then had time to take in the scenery en route to the end zone.
His 41-yard interception return in the fourth quarter was one of several big
plays by the New York Giants' defense in another stifling effort.
"I looked at the Jumbotron and saw I had enough room to slow down," Tuck said.
"I don't need to sprint into the end zone. I like to act like I've been there."
The defense spent the entire afternoon in the Rams' backfield, sacking Marc
Bulger six times while limiting St. Louis to a fluke touchdown in a 41-13
victory on Sunday...more
The Indianapolis Colts were overwhelmed at the line of scrimmage again, and the
swarming Minnesota defense frequently pounded Peyton Manning into the Metrodome
turf.
But the Colts put the Manning touch on another impressive rally, thanks to a
handful of clutch completions near the end by their stalwart quarterback, and
reminded the Vikings it's just not possible to win without throwing the ball.
Manning passed for 311 yards and moved Adam Vinatieri in position for the
winning field goal with 3 seconds left, leading Indianapolis to an 18-15 victory
on Sunday after Minnesota led 15-0 late in the third quarter...more
In his attempt to redesign the Washington Redskins offense, rookie coach Jim
Zorn has constantly peppered Jason Campbell with all sorts of phrases. One of
them: "Avoid, reset and throw."
With the Redskins trailing 24-15 entering the fourth quarter, QB Jason Campbell
stepped up. After an early incompletion, he finished 8-of-8, including a 67-yard
TD. A look at Campbell's nine fourth-quarter throws:
On Sunday, both got the point. Campbell went from uncomfortable to prolific with
a 321-yard passing day, and he mastered the "avoid, reset and throw" move with
aplomb on a 67-yard touchdown to Santana Moss as the Redskins came from behind
to beat the New Orleans Saints 29-24...more
The latest jarring hit by the Chicago Bears left Jake Delhomme holding his head
and the Carolina Panthers staring at yet another home flop.
As Delhomme wobbled to the sideline with the Panthers trailing by two touchdowns
in the third quarter Sunday, ex-Bear Chris Harris was fed up.
"I gathered everybody up and told them, 'Hey, we aren't going to take that,"'
the safety said.
They didn't. Harris, Delhomme and rookie running back Jonathan Stewart led a
stirring comeback for a 20-17 win that gave the Panthers an unlikely 2-0 start...more
The Jacksonville Jaguars had the lead, the momentum and the home-field
advantage. None of that mattered to Trent Edwards.
Edwards was good early and even better later, doing just enough to lead the
Buffalo Bills to their best start in five years.
Edwards finished 20-of-25 for 239 yards and a touchdown -- a perfect 7-yard toss
to James Hardy in the fourth quarter -- and the Bills beat the beleaguered
Jaguars 20-16 on a steamy Sunday...more
It had been four years since the 49ers had a 300-yard passing game. It had been
longer than that since the Seahawks were 0-2.
"Well, I haven't been here," was J.T. O'Sullivan's pithy answer to that.
San Francisco's new quarterback shook off eight sacks to lead a comeback and Joe
Nedney overcame missed field goal as time expired in regulation to kick a
40-yarder 4:40 into overtime Sunday, sending the revitalized 49ers past Seattle
33-30...more
Brian Griese played smart, if not especially well, giving the Tampa Bay
Buccaneers what they needed most: a win.
The Bucs turned two early mistakes by
Atlanta's Matt Ryan into 10 points, and Griese "managed" the team's offense well
enough to likely hold on to the starting quarterback job after a 24-9 victory
over the Falcons on Sunday...more
Life without Tom Brady might not be so bad for New England after all.
Matt Cassel was efficient running the offense in his first NFL start, taking
over for the injured quarterback and leading the Patriots over Brett Favre and
the New York Jets 19-10 on Sunday...more
Kurt Warner was completing pass after pass in a flashback to his heady MVP and
Super Bowl days.
"When you have one of those days when everything's clicking and you feel like
you can't be stopped, it brings back a lot of memories of those great years," he
said.
This performance came at age 37 for an Arizona team that may finally be escaping
its poor history after a 31-10 victory over Miami that has the Cardinals 2-0 for
the first time in 17 years...more
The Denver Broncos were on such a lucky streak, why not roll the dice?
Showing ultimate confidence in his offense and maybe an equal dollop of distrust
in his defense, Mike Shanahan went for the two-point conversion with 29 seconds
left and Jay Cutler hit rookie Eddie Royal over the middle to give the Denver
Broncos a 39-38 win over San Diego on Sunday.
"Sometimes you have to go with your gut," Shanahan said. "I just felt like it
was a chance for us to put them away. I didn't want to count on the coin flip. I
wanted to do it then, and obviously it worked out."
It was the third successful two-point attempt from a team going for the win
instead of a tie in the waning seconds of a game since the two-point conversion
was added in 1994, and the first since Tampa Bay beat Washington 36-35 on Mike
Allstott's run on Nov. 13, 2005...more
On a less-than-ideal night for football or any other outdoor activity, the
Pittsburgh Steelers made it a perfect 10 over the Cleveland Browns.
Ignoring his sore right shoulder and wind gusts of 60 mph, Ben Roethlisberger
threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Hines Ward as the Steelers made it 10
straight wins over their closest rival, beating the Browns 10-6 on Sunday to
extend the NFL's longest current winning streak between two teams.
As is their way, the Steelers wrecked Cleveland's return to prime time after a
five-year hiatus...more
NFL Game Predictor
We enter week two with the NFL turned upside down, and the predictor
reflects that this week as a lot of teams that would have been marked as
wins using last seasons numbers are clear losses this year and only time
will tell if these teams are pretenders, or contenders. The predictor
has a few teams falling into a 0-2 hole that would have been
unthinkable, like the Chargers and the Colts, while upstarts like The
Falcons and Ravens with their young leaders both are predicted to head
to 2-0. Only time will tell in this upside down season. Be sure to check
