Feely’s field goal in OT gives Jets 34-31 win

Brett Favre and the New York Jets stand alone atop the tight AFC East standings—barely.

Jay Feely kicked a 34-yard field goal on the only series of overtime after New England tied the game on Matt Cassel’s pass to Randy Moss with one second left in regulation and the Jets survived a Tom Brady-like comeback with a 34-31 victory Thursday night.

The win broke a tie for the division lead between the teams and gave the Jets (7-3) sole possession of first place for the first time since Nov. 19, 2001, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The Patriots (6-4) have won the AFC East the last five seasons and six of the last seven.

New England “had all the momentum,” said Favre, who threw two touchdown passes and directed the winning drive. “Based on history, you would have bet against us. This says a lot about our team.”

The Jets, who led 24-6 in the first half, extended their winning streak to four with their sixth victory in seven games and are 1 1/2 games ahead of Buffalo and Miami in the division. They beat the Patriots for only the second time in 13 games...more

Preview: Injuries are nothing new for the New England Patriots. Neither is first place in the AFC East. After absorbing a likely season-ending injury to another defensive stalwart, the Patriots try to contain Brett Favre and the surging New York Jets' offense on Thursday night in a matchup for the division lead. New England (6-3) earned a key division win Sunday, controlling the clock for nearly 38 minutes and outgaining Buffalo 370-168 en route to a 20-10 victory...more

Prediction: The Jets have won three in a row and been a surprising bunch and its not just Brett Favre doing it. They have risen to the top of the NFC East and now they put it on the line against the even more surprising Patriots who have managed to stay there without Tom Brady. The Jets have been scoring a lot of points in most games while New England has been playing good defense. The Pats were already without Tom Brady, Laurence Maroney and Rodney Harrison when they were kicked in the gut again on Sunday. They'll face the Jets without Pro Bowler Adalius Thomas (broken arm). That makes this a classic matchup that should come down to quarterback play and although we think NE has done great, you have to give the edge to Favre in these situations.
