Pregame Previews, Storylines, and News

Previews:

Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans three years ago, flooding 80 percent of the city and forcing the New Orleans Saints out of their home stadium for the entire 2005 season.

Despite concerns that Hurricane Gustav might pack a similar punch when it hit land early this week, the city -- and its rebuilt Superdome -- held up just fine.

After evacuating with much of the city in anticipation of the storm, the Saints make their second return to the Superdome in three years Sunday when they open the 2008 season by hosting the NFC South rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers...more

BUCCANEERS: The Bucs are hoping to get bigger chunks of yardage this season by adding quick play-makers like WR Antonio Bryant and RB Warrick Dunn. WR Joey Galloway still makes the offense go. But he has not played or practiced much in the off-season and Gruden has to make his legs count. So look for the Bucs to be balanced, utilizing their two tight end, one back sets to pound the ball in the early downs. Then both Graham and Dunn could share the backfield to create mismatches on passing downs. Defensively, the Bucs haven't done much to improve their pass rush. So defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin may have to rely on more blitzes than normal in the Tampa Two scheme...FULL STORY

SAINTS: To get the season off to a good start, the Saints must find out where their running game is. Bruised and battered last season when Deuce McAllister went down in Week 3 with a torn left ACL, the Saints struggled in his absence and went on to finish 28th in rushing offense with 91.6 yards per game. McAllister has returned from the injury, but he was brought along slowly in the exhibition season -- leaving many to wonder how effective he will be. They can make a big statement against the Bucs, however, if he, Reggie Bush, Aaron Stecker and Pierre Thomas can gain some confidence with a good game against the Bucs' defense...FULL STORY

Bucs recover from big hole, beat KC 30-27 in OT
Matt Bryant missed a 38-yard field goal attempt on a third down play in overtime, but tackle Jeremy Trueblood was called for a false start. Brad Johnson plays like his age, but defense helps Cowboys beat Bucs 13-9
In his second start subbing for injured Tony Romo, Johnson repeatedly threw passes that probably wouldn’t get first downs but also likely wouldn’t be intercepted. His safety-first approach annoyed the home fans—until the Dallas Cowboys walked away 13-9 winners over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday...

Denver’s defense finally shows up in 16-13 win over Tampa
Brian Griese has one more bad memory of Denver to digest. Tampa Bay’s quarterback was knocked out of the game with a swollen right elbow on a blind-side blitz in the third quarter Sunday, and he watched helplessly as Jay Cutler guided a patient Denver offense to a 16-13 win over the Buccaneers....
