Postgame Recap, Storylines,
and News |
Recap: The Cleveland
Browns finished an unforgettable
regular season, then braced for
overtime - about seven hours
worth. Joshua Cribbs returned a
punt 76 yards for a touchdown,
Jamal Lewis rushed for 128 yards
and rookie quarterback Brady
Quinn made his long-awaited NFL
debut as the Browns beat the San
Francisco 49ers 20-7 Sunday.
Then they settled in front of
their TVs to cheer for the
Indianapolis Colts.
The Browns (10-6), just 4-12
a year ago, will miss the AFC
playoffs again, as the Titans
beat the Colts, and clinched the
AFC's final playoff spot...FULL

Preview: The
Cleveland Browns blew their
chance last week to clinch their
first playoff spot in five
seasons. Now trying to secure
the AFC's final slot is largely
out of their hands, and coach
Romeo Crennel knows not to
expect any favors. With their
playoff fate resting on Sunday
night's game between
Indianapolis and Tennessee, the
Browns play essentially a
meaningless regular-season
finale in the afternoon against
the San Francisco 49ers.
Cleveland (9-6) could have
cemented a playoff spot and
preserved its hopes of winning
the AFC North last Sunday, but
fell 19-14 at Cincinnati...Full
StoryInside the Game Plans:
49ERS:
The 49ers are expecting cold
weather conditions, so they will
continue to focus this week on
their running attack and
short-passing game. That is a
formula that the 49ers have used
effectively since Shaun Hill has
been in the lineup to take over
for injured quarterbacks Alex
Smith and Trent Dilfer. Running
back Frank Gore has finished the
season strong after getting off
to a rough start. He is still
bothered by a right ankle
sprain, but Gore has not allowed
it to prevent him from rushing
for more than 1,000 yards this
season. Gore is the league's
15th-leading rusher. His
4.3-yard average is tied for
sixth among backs who rank in
the top 15. Gore has been
effective running the ball in
recent weeks as well as catching
passes out of the backfield.
Hill has done a good job of
spreading the ball around with
his short-passing attack. He
seems to go through his
progression effectively and does
a nice job of getting the ball
out quickly to avoid the pass
rush. Defensively, the 49ers
have done a good job of slowing
down rushing attacks. The 49ers'
defense ranks third in the
league in opponents' rushing
average...FULL

BROWNS:
The Browns will not know until
late Sunday night whether they
are in the playoffs.
Indianapolis would have to beat
the Titans for that to happen.
The Browns-49ers game has no
bearing on the playoff situation
unless the Titans and Colts tie.
In that case, the Browns would
be 10-6 if they beat the 49ers
and the Titans would be 9-6-1.
Coach Romeo Crennel does not
plan to rest his starters in
anticipation time off would
reenergize the players if they
do make the playoffs. Playing
well against the 49ers would
give a confidence boost to Derek
Anderson, who last week threw
four interceptions against the
Bengals. Anderson needs two
touchdown passes to tie the
franchise record of 30 set by
Brian Sipe in 1980...FULL
