and News |
Shaun Hill passed for 197 yards
and a touchdown and ran for
another score in his first NFL
start, and the San Francisco
49ers beat the Cincinnati
Bengals 20-13 on Saturday night
for just their second victory in
12 games.
Frank Gore rushed for a
season-high 138 yards, and
Darrell Jackson had a
season-high eight catches for 86
yards in a surprisingly
effective San Francisco (4-10)
offense led by Hill, a six-year
veteran backup who only threw
his first NFL passes last week
after Trent Dilfer got a
concussion...FULL

BENGALS: The Bengals
could play keep-away from the
49ers; they average just 26:29
in possession time and convert
just 23 percent of their third
downs offensively, 52 of 177.
The Bengals want to control the
running game of Frank Gore and
force third-string quarterback
Shaun Hill, making his first NFL
start, to pass.
The Bengals should be able to
run a balanced offense with
Carson Palmer passing and Rudi
Johnson running. The Bengals
should be able to turn takeaways
into points, as well. The 49ers
have committed 32 turnovers this
season and are minus-13, second
worst in the NFL...FULL

49ERS: With Shaun Hill
at quarterback, the 49ers will
have to employ a short-passing
game that moves Hill out of the
pocket and takes advantage of
his quick release. Hill's
ability to throw the ball down
the field is in question. He
does not have much of a deep
arm, but a broken right index
finger makes it even more
difficult on him to deliver the
intermediate and deep routes.
The 49ers will try to use a
variety of looks from their 3-4
defense. Coach Mike Nolan and
defensive coordinator Greg
Manusky have done a good job of
rotating fresh bodies onto the
field. The 49ers will often
switch to a 4-3 defense. They
need to be able to generate some
pressure on Bengals QB Carson
Palmer...FULL
