Browns plow through Blizzard,
and the Bills 8-0 to get one
step closer to playoffs
|
Postgame Recaps, Storylines,
and News |
The weather outside was ugly,
but that didn't keep Jamal Lewis
and the Cleveland Browns from
plowing closer to the
postseason. Jamal Lewis ran for
163 yards in blizzard-like
conditions, and the Cleveland
defense kept the Bills off the
board in an 8-0 win. Beat
Cincinnati next week and the
Browns (9-5) will make the
playoffs for the first time
since 2002.
While neither team could
throw the ball very well, the
Browns were able to run it
better than the Bills (7-7), who
were eliminated from the
postseason. Marshawn Lynch
rushed for 82 yards but averaged
just 3.9 yard a carry against a
Browns defense that posted its
first shutout since 2005...

BILLS:
Buffalo's defense performed
marvelously the past two weeks
against Washington and Miami,
but it's probably safe to assume
that Cleveland's much more
talented offense will still find
a way to score. The question
then becomes can Buffalo hold
the Browns below its 28
points-per game average? And
then can its own offense, which
is averaging 11.2 points per
game on the road, score enough
against Cleveland's 32nd-ranked
defense to make it a game?
The Bills, which rank 30th in
defense, shut down the run and
recorded nine sacks the past two
weeks. But Cleveland is a stiff
test. Veteran RB Jamal Lewis is
running possessed with a 4.2
average and nine scores and
feel-good story QB Derek
Anderson (26 TDs, 14 INTs) has
been sacked just 11 times. And
with Anderson's receiving
weapons, Buffalo's best defense
might be a good offense. Short
throws by QB Trent Edwards and a
lot of carries for Marshawn
Lynch and Fred Jackson -- they
had 38 last week for 222 yards
-- will help keep Cleveland's
potent attack off the field and
give the Bills defense rest for
what could either be a
nail-biter won by somebody's
field-goal kicker or a Browns
rout...FULL

BROWNS: The Browns
receivers have a distinct height
advantage on the Buffalo
secondary. Braylon Edwards is
6-foot-3 and Joe Jurevicius is
6-5. Tight end Kellen Winslow
Jr. is 6-4. New starting safety
Jim Leonhard is 5-8, and right
cornerback Terrance McGee is
5-9. He would be matched against
Jurevicius. The temptation is to
throw deep and win jump balls,
but the Bills do a good job of
keeping the receivers in front
of them and making tackles. The
strategy has not worked
perfectly because the Bills have
allowed 18 touchdown passes. If
the Bills jam the box with
strong safety Donte Whitner to
stop Jamal Lewis, they can get
one-on-one coverage with their
receivers...FULL
