over hapless 49ers

Trent Dilfer was intercepted
four times by the Panthers but
the crushing turnover was a
fumbled punt return that snuffed
every bit of momentum out of a
strong second-half start.
Dilfer was also sacked six
times by a Carolina defense that
had mustered only 10 sacks in
its previous 11 games. He also
suffered the ignominy of losing
to 44-year-old Vinny Testaverde,
who overcame two picks to lead
the Panthers to their first home
win in more than a year and end
a five-game losing skid.
The 49ers had closed a
17-point halftime deficit to
17-14 before Nate Clements
fumbled a punt on his own
11-yard line, giving up the ball
and an easy score to Carolina.
