Recap:
In his first
NFL start, Philip Rivers didn't do much more than hand the ball off
and watch his defense dominate. He didn't have to which is good news
for Chargers fans as Pittsburgh showed a first year quarterback can
win with a dominating running game and defense.
Rivers, who spent his first two seasons as a backup, went 8-for-11 for
108 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Gates in the
fourth quarter that made it 20-0.
The Chargers ran the ball on 48 of 59 plays, and Rivers threw only
two passes to wide receivers in the whole game, meanwhile the Raiders
appeared to just roll over for them as is becoming all too commonplace
for a team with way too much talent to consistently be as bad as they
have been.
Art Shell was brought back to Oakland to turn the Raiders around, but
after one game it looked like the same old Raiders, who won 13 games
over the past three seasons.
For some unexplained reason although the Raiders were behind early
Aaron Brooks didn't even attempt a pass to Randy Moss in the game’s
first 25 minutes. He only attempted 14 passes completing 6 for 68 yards,
47 of which were to Randy Moss.
Totally inexplicable play calling and a lackluster defensive effort
are not going to get the Raiders very far. They are going to have to
take a couple of steps back and regroup after this debacle. It seems we
have been saying that forever about the Raiders though.
The Chargers' victory
capped an opening weekend in the NFL in which 11 games were won by
visiting teams, the most on opening weekend since 1983, when 12
teams did it.
