 NFL Scouts Grading Criteria - Wide Receivers
  • Start: Initial quickness or first step quickness off the LOS (line of scrimmage) to elude defenders to beat press coverage. Strength to ward off defenders versus press coverage.
  • Release and drive: Second step quickness. Ability to beat defender off the LOS and make a move and release downfield into his route.
  • Patterns and cuts: Precision on running routes. Getting the proper depth and breaking off the route at a designed point. Overall sharpness and crispness of routes. Body control to hold and execute fakes and quickly cut and separate from the defender.
  • Short routes: quickness, hip flexibility to turn, separate and spot up to the throw.
  • Medium routes: quick burst and cutting ability to separate from defenders and wheel around to receive the throw.
  • Deep routes: effectiveness on deep routes. Quickness to elude, accelerate and burst to separate from the defender and release deep.
  • Adjust to the ball: The ability to maneuver his body and extend for the ball.
  • Crowd reaction: The ability to focus with defenders closing in.
  • Hit: the ability to hold onto the ball and execute after receiving a hit.
  • Hands: the ability to snatch the ball, hand catch outside the framework of his body.  Extension of hands in front of his body to cushion the force of the throw.
  • Concentration: the ability to see the ball into his hands and securing the ball before running after the catch.
  • Body: The ability to cradle the ball into his body effectively when not hand catching. Not allowing the ball to hit his body first and then trap it.
  • Run after the catch: Speed and quickness threat to gain yards after the catch. The ability to receive and catch the ball without breaking his stride.
  • Field awareness: Understanding and recognition of his position on the field. Footwork capabilities along the sidelines and in the endzone. Awareness of first down marker.
  • Blocking: Willingness and effort as blocker. Strength to sustain blocks in the running game. Agility and lateral quickness to mirror and sustain in the pass blocking game. Ability to effectively crack block in the open field.
