Flat back, low pad level. Ability to bend from the knees.
One-on-one blocker: Can he handle a defensive end by
himself?
Double team blocker: Does he adjust and use good
technique and work well with a linemate?
Quickness and balance to execute a down block
Strength to turn and wall a defender
Strength, technique and lateral quickness to sustain
blocks
PASSING GAME
Release quickness off the line
Quickness of feet, slide and redirect ability in pass
protection
Drive off after initial quickness into his pass route
Patterns and cuts: precision of routes and quickness
in and out of his cuts
Short, medium and deep routes: quickness and hip
flexibility to turn, separate and spot up to the throw on the short routes,
burst and cutting ability to separate from a defender and wheel around to
receive the throw on the medium route and the quickness to elude and
accelerate and burst to release deep versus the defender
Adjust to the ball: the ability to maneuver his body
and extend for the ball
Crowd reaction: the ability to focus with defenders
closing in
Hit: the ability to hold onto the ball and execute
after receiving a hit
Hands: the ability to snatch the ball and hand catch
outside the framework of his body. Extension of hands in front of his body to
cushion the force of the throw
Concentration: the ability to see the ball into his
hands and securing the ball before running after the catch
Body: the ability to cradle the ball into his body
effectively when not hand catching; not allowing the ball to hit his body
first and then trap it
Run after the catch: speed and quickness threat to
gain yards after the catch; the ability to receive and catch the ball without
breaking his stride
Field awareness: understanding and recognition of his
position on the field; footwork capabilities along the sidelines and in the
endzone; awareness of the first down marker
