Random football blogitude...Whiners and crybabies edition

So much to talk about this week and most of it centers on the whining and complaining in football.  It's just become hard to hear, so let's dive right in.

Seems that Hazing-gate is all the rage on the internets.  Long story short, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams asks Cowboys rookie Dez Bryant to carry his pads, and Bryant refuses, citing that he's there to play football not carry someone's pads.

Dez, you are an idiot.  I didn't make this decision today.  I didn't make it when you forgot your cleats for your pro day.  It goes ...

Best of the Bunch: Offensive Line

I love watching offensive line play.  I suppose as a former lineman myself, I hold a special place in my heart for the big uglies.  And when you see an elite player, you know it.  Seemingly every year a player or two step into that arena.  And so it’s with a heavy heart that I say as of right now going into the 2010 season, I don’t see that type of player I the country right now.  Lots of talented players, but no one with that “it” factor.  What this means for me is, when I am looking for the best offensive line in the country, including that uber talented player isn’t going to be part of the equation.  So instead I look at things like returning starters and upper classmen with starting experience and how productive their offense was.

Best of the Bunch: Wide Receivers/Tight Ends

Wide outs/Tight Ends has become increasingly more challenging to rank for a couple of reasons.  One is the fact that fewer and fewer college teams utilize the tight end in the passing game like they should.  Another is these spread offenses.  Spread passing games can mask minimal talent with the scheme, and spread running games can misuse talented players.  I used to put much more emphasis on the tight end and penalize teams that didn't have a receiver at the spot, but while there are still some teams that do it on my list, I won't automatically discount a team that doesn't.  One thing I do demand is some top end talent.  So when I look at the 4 teams I think are the real elite, the University of Houston and their ...

Best of the Bunch: Running Backs

Running back is a position that it seems no matter how many guys end up in the NFL, there are always a load of talented ball carriers to light up our Saturdays.  This year is no exception.  Because of this, it makes putting a top ten units together, much less picking a best unit all the more difficult.  One thing I had to consider is depth.  Just like in the NFL, the days of the feature back are rare.  Most teams platoon two backs and in some cases 3.  They use complimentary players, and specialists to help round out their rush offense.  So if you are a team like Oklahoma with a great talent like Demarco Murray and a bunch of untested guys behind him, you aren’t going to be in the hunt for the top.

Best of the Bunch: Quarterbacks

Last year, I lumped my quarterbacks and running backs together for my best of the bunch articles, but this year, the groups are so different I felt like it was only fair to both groups to give each their own breakdown.  Obviously, when I look at the best quarterback unit in the nation, I have to give some consideration to depth, but let’s be honest.  The best quarterbacks in the nation are the reason their team wins or loses and as much as we’d like to say that the backups can come in and the teams won’t miss a beat, we know it isn’t true.

Also for this exercise, I am not considering NFL potential.  Some of the most dominant and successful quarterbacks in the history of college football have never ...

Friday, er Tuesday Blogitude...

Forgive me for not putting my Friday blog up until today.  This week has been crazy for me.  Planning a family vacation to Dallas this week, and I’ve been scouring the interwebs for bargains and deals.  Note to anyone who reads this who can hook me up with some Dallas swag, I am not opposed to trading ad space on this site for said swag.  I have no shame.  And I am a cheap bastage.

Anyway, enough begging, onto the blog.  This week it’s a mix.  Not all sports, that’s for sure.  Pretty slow sports week to be honest.

NBA ends!!!

It was so nice to see a merciful end to the NBA season.  I did watch a few minutes of the 7th game but not enough to comment on it to any great degree.  I’m just glad it’s over.  That makes two with hockey.  If I can just get rid of MLB, I’ll ...

Goodbye NFL, you will not be missed.

I would like to formally thank Albert Haynesworth, and the NFL.  I want to thank them for helping me free up my Sundays this fall/winter.  I am going to be able to get so much more done.  I will be able to dedicate far more time to film study of college prospects, spend time with my family, and maybe catch up on some reading.

Why am I thanking them?  Because thanks to these greedy, selfish petulant children, they have made my decision to not support the NFL this season an easy one.

I am a sane rational guy for the most part.  Married, two beautiful daughters and a career I love.  I am a school teacher for those that don't know.  Special Education.  It's incredibly rewarding and fulfilling.  What it isn't is lucrative.  But that's ok.  In today's economy you learn how to pinch pennies and make sacrifices and it's worth it, ...
