2009 NFL Computerized Mock Draft
Our Computerized
Mock 2009 NFL Draft
Version 3.0 - April 24th, 2009
We go into our third mock and the changes are aplenty. The top 4 spots don't show any movement, but with Mike Crabtree moving up to number 5 the changes are aplenty from there down. With a few positive drug tests and huge trades involving Atlanta and KC knocking Brandon Pettigrew out of the Falcons slot and the Bills grabbing the 28 spot from Philly it just keeps changing as we move down the board. Also we have added video for selected prospects on the new NFL Draft prospect pages.
This computerized mock draft is compiled using our
own experts along with the grades from over 50 NFL draft
sites, as well as over 20 other criteria to give the best overall consensus mock on the web. Here are our latest rankings on who will go where, along
with their DQI rankings.

Team |
Pick | Position |
DQI* |
|
| 1 |
Matthew Stafford (JR) 6'3" 235 lbs |
QB Georgia |
1.874 | |
The
Lions need a franchise QB to build around. Georgia
QB Stafford has a cannon, and has the look of the
prototypical NFL quarterback. Stafford would be able
to deliver the ball to Calvin Johnson from anywhere
on the field. Stafford is not a perfect candidate
though as he
occasionally disappears from the game or makes a
serious mental lapse which costs his team. The Lions
can afford to work with him on his shortcomings and
could build a great offense around Stafford and
Calvin Johnson.Other Possibilities: OT Jason Smith, OT Eugene Monroe, LB Aaron Curry |
||||
| 2 | St. Louis Rams |
Jason Smith 6'5" 305 lbs |
OT |
2.055 |
Jason
Smith is the most physical of the tackles, he may
not quite be as good as Monroe has the potential to
be, but he does not have the physical problems that
Monroe does. He has three years of starting
experience at tackle for Baylor after starting his
collegiate career as a TE. Jason excelled at the
combine, he did 33 reps on the bench, had a 24"
vertical jump, an 8' broad jump, ran a 7.53 3-cone
drill and a 4.69 20yd shuttle. We think he is
overrated here and that Monroe would be the better
pick, but the computer says its Smith for now.Other Possibilities: OT Eugene Monroe, OT Andre Smith, QB Matt Stafford |
||||
| 3 | Kansas City Chiefs |
Aaron Curry 6'3" 246 lbs |
LB Wake Forest |
2.057 |
What
is 6'3", 254 pounds, runs a 4.55 forty, has a 37"
vertical, a 10'4" broad and has no character issues?
This year's safest all-around draft pick. Aaron
Curry is the closest thing to a sure thing in any
NFL draft and you can bet if he falls to the Chiefs
they will be rushing to get to the podium. They will
try to trade down if Curry is gone. The Chiefs
coaches come from a system with two great wide
receivers though, so Crabtree cannot be completely
overlooked here either. The good thing for the
Chiefs is they need help everywhere except
quarterback so they really cant go wrong in this
spot.Other Possibilities: DE Brian Orapko, OT Jason Smith, OT Eugene Monroe, WR Mike Crabtree |
||||
| 4 | Seattle Seahawks |
Eugene Monroe 6' 5" 309 lbs |
OT Virginia |
2.375 |
Monroe
has great feet, but doesn't stay on his blocks as
long as Jason Smith. He also has the knee issues to
worry about.
At 6’ 5” and 309 pounds, Other Possibilities: DE Brian Orapko, OT Jason Smith, WR Mike Crabtree, QB Mark Sanchez |
||||
| 5 | Cleveland Browns |
Mike Crabtree (So) 6'3" 214 lbs |
WR Texas Tech |
2.389 |
Crabtree is by far the best WR
in this draft. Crabtree is a game changer and a
tremendous value at this spot. He has the size, the
athleticism, the body control, and good enough speed
to make plays in the NFL those who think his success
is due to Tech's system will be shutting up come the
season.
Other Possibilities:
|
||||
| 6 | Cincinnati Bengals |
Andre Smith 6'4" 325 lbs |
OT Alabama |
2.391 |
Andre
is huge, yet he is athletic as can be. He shuts down
everyone pretty much and although he does not show
up the best under the pressure of the combine,
however when he plays, you cannot miss him. With his
size, he may get converted to guard and would be
probably the best guard in the NFL.Other Possibilities: LB Aaron Curry, WR Mike Crabtree, CB Malcolm Jenkins, DT B.J. Raji |
||||
| 7 | Oakland Raiders |
Jeremy Maclin (So) 6'1" 200lbs |
WR Missouri |
2.447 |
A l
Davis loves speed and Maclin provides speed to burn,
he is electrifying and is a perfect fit for the
Raiders vertical game.
Maclin is the most
electrifying player in this years draft as he can
score every time he touches the ball. Will be an
electrifying returner. Maclin should be the
pick if pure speed is what Davis wants, but if
Crabtree falls this far it is going to be a tough
choice.Other Possibilities: DE Brian Orakpo, WR Michael Crabtree |
||||
| 8 | Jacksonville Jaguars |
Mark Sanchez (Jr) 6'3" 225 lbs |
QB USC |
2.688 |
The
Jags pretty much made a WR a necessity here after
releasing Matt Jones. But there is no value left at
this position and they have a regressing 31 year old
quarterback. So we think they are going to grab
Sanchez before the 49ers get a chance. The
most NFL ready QB coming out running USC's pro style
offense. Sanchez can make all the throws and is
efficient and accurate, but with just one year of
starting experience he is going to need some
developmental time. He can be a franchise qb, but
maybe not right away. This is a perfect situation
and it cant hurt that Jack Del Rio is a USC grad.Other Possibilities: WR Michael Crabtree, WR Jeremy Maclin, DT B.J. Raji, OT Michael Oher |
||||
| 9 | Green Bay Packers |
Malcolm Jenkins 6'1" 201lbs |
DB Ohio State |
4.588 |
Jenkins
is like a young Charles Woodson, so what better
place than to learn from Woodson and possibly moving
Woodson over to safety. He has
excellent size, athleticism, and speed and can run
with just about any receiver. Great recovery skills.Other Possibilities: CB Vontae Davis, OT Michael Oher |
||||
| 10 | San Francisco 49ers |
Brian Orakpo 6' 3" 255 lbs |
DE Texas |
7.801 |
Most
would call Orakpo the best DE in the nation, he may
be better suited to be a rush linebacker at the next
level. Orakpo makes a lot of plays along and behind
the line of scrimmage. Orakpo is not an elite
athlete and gets by on his intensity, smarts, and
heart. He plays a lot like Jared Allen and may well
be that kind of NFL end who is not great against the
run, but is a force rushing the passer.
Other Possibilities:
|
||||
| 11 | Buffalo Bills |
Everette Brown (Jr) 6'4" 252 lbs |
DE Florida St. |
7.985 |
|
The Bills covet Orakpo and hope he
falls to them, but Everette Brown is a terror off
the edge. Brown explodes off
the snap and aggressively gets up the field towards
the quarterback. The only knock on him is the old "tweener"
label, but in today's NFL the "tweeners" are
becoming premier pass rushers. Other Possibilities: DE Aaron Maybin, DE Brian Orapkoi, OT Michael Oher |
||||
| 12 | Denver Broncos |
B.J.
Raji 6'2" 337 lbs |
DT (NT) Boston College |
9.907 |
|
The Broncos are switching to a 3-4
and they have two big needs, a NT to man the middle
which we would look at B.J. Raji, or a linebacker to
stop the run in Rey Maualuga, we would not be overly
surprised with either here. But in this mock we go
with Raji. Raji has an incredible burst at the snap
and penetrates well. Raji showed incredible
strength, speed, and just dominated at the Senior
Bowl and at the combine as well. Raji was
arguably the most dominant defensive lineman in the
country, registering 42 tackles, 16 tackles for loss
and eight sacks. |
||||
| 13 | Washington Redskins |
Michael Oher 6'4" 309 lbs |
OT Mississippi |
10.904 |
|
Oher had a horrendous combine which
really dropped him, but he is almost interchangeable
in ability with the other top tackles, but his
erratic behavior can be a problem. However he
absolutely can dominate the defensive end and will
protect your quarterback at any cost. Other Possibilities: OT Andre Smith, DE Tyson Jackson, LB Brian Cushing, DE Everette Brown |
||||
| 14 | New Orleans Saints |
Brian Cushing 6'3" 243 lbs |
LB USC |
11.522 |
|
After a great Senior Bowl week, this
three year USC starter should be a lock. He is a
sure tackler who may start out as a first and second
down player as he will have to grow his pass
coverage skills as he is still a little stiff in
coverage. Other Possibilities: LB Clay Matthews, LB Aaron Maybin, CB Vontae Davis |
||||
| 15 | Houston Texans |
Vontae Davis (Jr) 6'0" 205 lbs |
CB Illinois |
12.001 |
|
Vontae is the younger brother of
Vernon Davis and is just as much a freakish athletic
specimen. He can make all the plays and run with
anyone, but he has a little lack of discipline and
can take himself out of position at times, but that
can be easily fixed and Davis should make a fine CB
for some time. Other Possibilities: RB Chris Wells, RB Knowhson Moreno |
||||
| 16 | San Diego Chargers |
Rey Maualuga 6'2" 260 lbs |
LB USC |
12.688 |
|
Rey is a force in the
middle and puts fear into opposing offenses, he can
be something special and you could conceivably build
a defense around him. The Chargers linebackers are
aging and Rey could be the player to restart with.
|
||||
| 17 | New York Jets |
Josh Freeman 6'6" 250 lbs |
QB Kansas St. |
15.025 |
|
The Jets need a QB, and Sanchez is
not going to fall this far. So they are really stuck
with Freeman at this point unless something amazing
happens in the remainder of Free Agency.
Freeman will be a good QB, but is not ready to step
in and start. Of course last year a lot were saying
that about a couple of other quarterbacks. If they
get a QB elsewhere, look for them to go WR here. Other Possibilities: QB Mark Sanchez, WR Percy Harvin, WR Darrius Heyward-Bey |
||||
| 18 |
Denver Broncos (from Chicago) |
Clay Matthews 6'3" 240 lbs |
LB USC |
16.225 |
|
With this pick from the Bears, the
Broncos get to get well in a hurry. The QB's are
gone now, so they will continue to build that
defense. After shoring up the line with Raji at 12
they get to go after Matthews here to shore up the
linebacking corps.
Matthews has a
classic linebacker frame with impressive closing
speed, and is a quick learner. Matthews should
thrive as a pass rusher in a 3-4, but projects well
in a 4-3 as well
|
||||
| 19 | Tampa Bay Bucs |
Peria Jerry 6'2" 290 lbs |
DT Ole Miss |
16.288 |
|
Jerry can plug a hole and also can
get into the backfield as a disruptor. When you look
at Jerry you cant help but think DT as he is built
strong and low. Other Possibilities: DE Tyson Jackson, RB Knowshon Moreno, QB Josh Freeman |
||||
| 20 |
Detroit Lions
(from Dallas) |
Eben Britton 6'6" 310 lbs |
OT Arizona |
16.552 |
|
Eben Britton has played both
offensive tackle positions and brings an exciting
combination of speed, wingspan, strength and field
intelligence. He has started all 37 games he
appeared in at Arizona, lining up at right offensive
tackle for the first 24 contests before shifting to
left tackle in 2008. Britton can protect the
franchises future for years to come.
Other Possibilities:
|
||||
| 21 | Philadelphia Eagles |
Chris Wells (Jr) 6'1" 237 lbs |
RB Ohio State |
17.559 |
|
Chris "Beanie" Wells was made to play
in Philly. He is a big back, with good hands and is
a power zone runner. Tough guy for a tough city.
Wells outbenches many of his offensive line
teammates. A classic North-South runner and his
stiff arms alone can draw gasps from the crowds. The
only negative with Wells is a injury history that
comes from being maybe a little too tough at times.
Other Possibilities:
|
||||
| 22 | Minnesota Vikings |
Percy Harvin 5'11" 185 lbs |
WR Florida |
18.022 |
|
Harvin has a second gear and attitude
similar to former USC standout Reggie Bush and like
Bush can be used at multiple positions. Bush
has not looked like the same player since entering
the league although he flashes at times, and
Harvin's similarities to Bush may hurt his position
some.
|
||||
| 23 | New England Patriots |
Michael Johnson 6'7" 266 lbs |
DE Georgia Tech |
18.885 |
|
At the combine he put up an
incredible set of on-field drills and ran faster,
was taller and heavier than most people thought, and
had a 38" vertical, 28 bench reps, 4.37 short
shuttle, and a 10'8" broad jump. This is a big play
game changing athlete who is still young enough to
get a lot better. Its almost unfair that the
Patriots can get a player this good at this draft
position, but for some reason the national media
(read Mike Mayock) decided that Johnson was going to
be this years assassination victim.
Other Possibilities:
|
||||
| 24 | Atlanta Falcons |
Evander "Ziggy"
Hood 6'3" 300 lbs |
DT Missouri |
19.011 |
|
The entire
world had Pettigrew going here, but with the trade
for Tony Gonzalez there is no need for a TE this
year so the Falcons are free to fix the line. Last
year they nearly took Dorsey instead of Ryan, there
are even rumors that they may trade this spot FOR
Dorsey this year.
Although Ziggy lacks the elite explosiveness
or strength usually associated with highly rated
defensive tackles, he is way more
than the sum of his measureables. He plays with
passion and will be a serviceable NFL player.
Other Possibilities: |
||||
| 25 | Miami Dolphins |
Kenny Britt (Jr) 6'4" 215 lbs |
WR Rutgers |
21.025 |
|
Kenny Britt had an impressive combine
and pro day and is quickly moving up boards, he is
not a Crabtree, Macklin, or Harvin, but he is
definitely in the next tier.
Other Possibilities:
|
||||
| 26 | Baltimore Ravens |
Darrius Heyward-Bey 6'2" 210 lbs |
WR Maryland |
22.778 |
|
Tremendous straight-line speed and
excellent run after the catch ability. DHB really
impressed at the combine with an amazing 4.30 forty
and a 40" vertical leap that lets him go up after
the ball. He could be a game breaker as he gets
stronger as long as he keeps his speed. Other Possibilities: DE/LB Aaron Maybin, CB DJ Moore, WR Kenny Britt |
||||
| 27 | Indianapolis Colts |
Knowshon Moreno (So) 5'11" 208 lbs |
RB Georgia |
23.225 |
| The Colts have a huge hole at tackle. They also are at a horrendous point in the draft, they need a receiver and Defensive line help, there is just not any first round talent left in this scenario. They go with the best available player here, in Knowshown Moreno. Moreno looks and plays smaller than his listed size so he may just be a change of pace back at the next level | ||||
| 28 |
Buffalo Bills (from Eagles via Carolina) |
Brandon Pettigrew 6'5" 265 lbs |
TE Oklahoma St. |
25.224 |
|
Pettigrew doesnt fall far as the
Bills absolutely covet him. Bills fans wanted Tony
Gonzalez, but will be very happy with Pettigrew
Other Possibilities:
|
||||
| 29 | New York Giants |
Hakeem Nicks (Jr) 6'1" 210 lbs |
WR North Carolina |
25.885 |
| The Giants need to add some talent at the WR spot. Nicks has excellent hands and will catch anything in his vicinity. He isnt a speedster, or any other standouts, what stands out is his overall play. Very much like Plaxico in that regard. He will be a productive player and is a nice fit for the G-men | ||||
| 30 | Tennessee Titans |
Alphonso Smith 5'9" 190 lbs |
CB Wake Forest |
25.886 |
| Alphonso is quick, has great instincts, can catch the ball very effectively and is rarely caught out of position. The one problem is his size. He is only 5-9 and 190 pounds but he has done nothing but provide results in his career. | ||||
| 31 | Arizona Cardinals |
James Laurinaitis 6'3" 240 lbs |
LB Ohio State |
27.552 |
| This may be the steal of the draft as it is a deep draft at LB and Laurinaitis would have been a top ten last year and after a 121 tackle 4 sack and 2 interception season, he seems to have fallen off the radar for some reason. He will be an impact player in the NFL. He is just a natural on the field. | ||||
| 32 | Pittsburgh Steelers |
Alex Mack 6'4" 316 lbs |
OL California |
28.555 |
|
Mack is a center but can also play guard.
Mack is a
physical lineman that can dominate at the point of
attack and plays both positions very well. Other Possibilities: OL Max Unger |
||||
Dropped out of first round:
Max Unger
6'4" 309 lbs
OL
Oregon
We don't list a line position for Unger because he can play all of them. 2 full seasons at left tackle and 2 seasons at center in college so guard is no problem either. He mauls opposing linemen and no one really can get past him. He may actually be a better tackle than center because he doesn't quite have the base against big NT and DT's.
2009 NFL Mock
Draft Version 1.0
2009 NFL DQI Computerized Mock
Draft Version 2.0
The Draft Quality Index rankings or DQI is a proprietary scientific formula taking into account the draft rankings from over 50 different respected NFL sources. The sources are not made public and you cannot ask to be included in these sources in order to maintain the integrity of the system. These rankings are then compared and placed into the database along with over 20 other factors rating each player based on things like 40 time and Wonderlic score, all weighted against past performances of similar NFL players for comparison to come up with a final DQI score. The DQI score can be viewed most simply with the following breakdown:
1.000-7.500 - Star NFL player or a cant miss
prospect
7.501-15.000 - Very good NFL career with possibility of
developing into a star. Very small chance of a bust
15.001-22.500 - Could develop but player has at least one deficiency
holding them back. Good enough to stay in the NFL long term.
22.501-30.000 - Developmental or specialty player. May even be a
starter but is most likely a specialist such as a pass rusher. Most draft
busts come in this range as teams reach.
30.001-50.000 - Pure Project Player almost always taken in the second
round or later. When one slips into the first round they are almost always
considered a bust.

Monroe
has great feet, but doesn't stay on his blocks as
long as Jason Smith. He also has the knee issues to
worry about.
Crabtree is by far the best WR
in this draft. Crabtree is a game changer and a
tremendous value at this spot.
Andre
is huge, yet he is athletic as can be. He shuts down
everyone pretty much and although he does not show
up the best under the pressure of the combine,
however when he plays, you cannot miss him. With his
size, he may get converted to guard and would be
probably the best guard in the NFL.
l

Maclin is the most
