New York Giants 2008 NFL Draft and
Free Agency Team Needs
The top needs for the Giants to fill
in the upcoming draft and free agency.
Safety: If Wilson
forces the issue and signs elsewhere, and if Butler is allowed to walk away,
the Giants will have to take immediate steps to replace one or both. On the
roster is 2007 rookie free agent Craig Dahl, who was a pleasant surprise and
might even be listed as a potential starter at strong safety. Similarly,
seventh round-pick Michael Johnson played at both safety spots and showed
promise, but you cant go into the season with just two second year players.
Wide receiver: With the age of Amani
Toomer (he'll be 34 the weekend the 2008 season opens) and the not so good
early career of 2006 second-round pick Sinorice Moss, the Giants will need a
deep threat to team up with Plaxico Burress and Steve Smith
Linebacker: Kawika Mitchell was just a
stop-gap and he's a free agent again while the Kiwanuka experiment is still
up in the air and he may even be moving back to defensive end plus Mitchell
already signed a long term deal with the Bills and Reggie Torbor was signed
by the Miami Dolphins. It now leaves the depth at that position very low.
With two LBers down, it may be a position they fill within the first 2
rounds.
Cornerback: Aaron Ross is a keeper but
Sam Madison and R.W. McQuarters are nearing the end of their careers and
Corey Webster's still somewhat unproven. When you have safety trouble you
had best have some great corners and the Giants are going to have to upgrade
one or both.
