NFL Draft - DQI Index Mock Draft |
2008 NFL Mock Draft -
Version 4.0
April 23rd, 2008
The latest DQI Mock Draft is here and it has a lot of changes,
including the late night trade of the Chiefs Jared Allen to the Vikings for the
#17 pick in the first round, plus the 2 third rounder picks (73rd and 82nd).
Jake Long is the obvious number one since he has already signed, but beyond that
everyone is all over the board. Most of the top 5 teams still want to trade down
if they can find any takers for value so it could be an interesting couple of
days leading up to the draft this weekend.
Our Computerized
Mock 2008 NFL Draft
This computerized mock draft is compiled using our
own experts along with the grades from over 50 NFL draft
sites, as well as over 20 other criteria to give the best overall consensus mock on the web. Here are our latest rankings on who will go where, along
with their DQI rankings.

|
1.
Miami
 |
Jake Long, OT,
Michigan
HEIGHT:
6-7 WEIGHT: 315
Long is the OT in this
draft, but may not end up being the best in the long
run. Long's strong combine
and pro days only
reiterated what everyone knows: that he is the
premier tackle in this draft
Notes:
14 starts at right
tackle and 11 at left tackle he is more suited to
the right side at the NFL level, but showed the
skills at the combine that have many believing he
can play the left side at the next level.
Other
Possibilities: None, he is already signed
|
1.375 |
|
2.
St. Louis
 |
Chris Long, DE,
Virginia
HEIGHT:
6-4 WEIGHT: 284
Long, the son of Hall
of Famer Howie Long, is a complete defensive end who
is an explosive pass rusher as is evidenced by his
14 sacks this year playing in a 3-4 system.
Notes: Long
won the 2007 Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year
Award. Long garnered "more than 60 percent of the
votes, the most ever for a winner in the history of
the award." Ted Hendricks and Long's father, Howie,
played together for the Oakland Raiders.
Other
Possibilities: Glenn Dorsey, Vernon Gholston,
|
1.750 |
|
3.
Atlanta
 |
Glenn Dorsey, DT,
LSU
HEIGHT:
6-2 WEIGHT: 299
Dorsey would be a serious upgrade to the D-Line and
would help solidify their run defense. Dorsey has
the speed and quickness to pressure and disrupt.
It has been strange with the injury questions, but
they never affected his play. Notes:
Dorsey was awarded the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the
Outland Trophy, the Lott Trophy and the Lombardi
Award, becoming the only player to have won all four
awards. Team captain for LSU’s 2007 national
championship team. Other
Possibilities:
Matt Ryan, Darren McFadden
|
1.944 |
|
4.
Oakland
 |
Darren McFadden, RB,
Arkansas (JR)
HEIGHT:
6-2 WEIGHT: 205The retirement of
Warren Sapp leaves the door open for the Raiders to
select Glenn Dorsey or Sedrick Ellis, but
pairing up McFadden
with last years number one Jamarcus Russell will
give the Raiders a backfield combo to fear for years
to come. We all know that the Raiders are the wild
cards as there is just no telling what the senile
old fart will do
Notes:
McFadden finished as the runner-up for the 2007
Heisman Trophy for the second year in a row. D-Mac
is the most decorated player in Arkansas history,
and holds virtually all of the universities rushing
records, and is also in a number of the SEC's
all-time top 10 rushing spots. As the offseason has
progressed he has had some trouble staying out of
trouble and if the Raiders pass on him, he could be
in for an epic free fall down the board.
Other
Possibilities:
Chris Long, Sedrick Ellis, Glenn
Dorsey
|
3.222 |
|
5.
Kansas City
 |
Branden Albert,
OG, VirginiaHEIGHT:
6-7 WEIGHT: 315
The Chiefs really
arelooking good in this draft with 6 of the top 100
picks and 2 in the first round. An OG with LT
potential, the word out of Kansas City is that he’d
be the pick over Ryan Clady, Jeff Otah, or Chris
Williams. Obviously, the Chiefs would love to trade
down and still land Albert and some more picks, and
they just might have the opportunity to make a trade
with the Ravens who covet Matt Ryan.
Other
Possibilities: Glenn Dorsey, Sedrick Ellis,
or if they are completely stupid, Matt Ryan or Brian
Brohm. the other possibility is that they take Ryan Clady who would
be way too early here, or the craziest idea of all
is that they would take Jeff Otah in this spot, the Chiefs can do as well if they can work a
trade down and take Clady, Williams, or Otah. The dream
scenario would be to trade for the Cowboys first two
picks plus if McFadden is still on the board and get Chris Williams or Sam Baker and some
help at cornerback as well. |
3.639 |
|
6.
NY Jets
 |
Vernon Gholston,
DE/OLB, Ohio State (JR)
HEIGHT:
6-4 WEIGHT: 264
The signing of Calvin
Pace could make the Jets pursue other positions such
as CB, but
Gholston
is too good to pass up, and the New England Patriots
would quickly snag him if they let him pass.
The Jets need to get
some pressure on opposing QB's and
Gholston
can certainly fill that bill.
Notes:
Was second in the Big Ten and tied
for third nationally with 14 sacks. He tends to
disappear at times, though, and was completely
invisible in the championship game.
Other
Possibilities: Darren McFadden, Chris Long
|
3.750 |
|
7.
New England (from San Fran)
 |
Keith Rivers, OLB,
USC
HEIGHT:
6-3 WEIGHT: 220
Rivers
may be a bit undersized (He is smaller than QB Brian
Brohm for example), but he has the speed and
athleticism to excel in the NFL
Notes: USC linebacker coach Ken Norton, Jr. nicknamed
Rivers "the Shark" for his aggressive play on the
field, juxtaposed to his polite demeanor off of it.
Other
Possibilities: Leodis McKelvin, Mike Jenkins, Ryan Clady, Vernon Gholston,
the nice thing about being the Patriots is you can
take the best player on the board
|
3.944 |
|
8.
Baltimore
 |
Matt Ryan, QB,
Boston College
HEIGHT:
6-5 WEIGHT: 220
Ryan is the consensus top quarterback in
a weak quarterback class this year
Notes:
Matt Ryan was awarded the 2007 Johnny Unitas Golden
Arm Award, given annually in the United States to
the Nation's most outstanding college football
senior quarterback. He was selected to play in the
2007 Senior Bowl. He also won the 2007 Manning
Award.
Other
Possibilities: Brian Brohm, Mike
Jenkins, Sedrick Ellis
|
4.667 |
|
9.
Cincinnati
 |
Sedrick Ellis, DT,
USC
HEIGHT:
6-1 WEIGHT: 285
No way Ellis makes it past the Bengals, especially
after they lost out in the Shaun Rogers and Dewayne
Robertson sweepstakes. Ellis is a little
short, but has the strength and explosiveness to
give interior linemen fits.
With the signing of
Antwan Odom, DE is no longer
a need , but with the
recent news out of Cincy WR might be.
Notes:
Ellis was voted the
Pacific 10 Conference 2007 Defensive Player of the
Year by league coaches, and selected to the
All-Conference first team. Ellis was the strongest
person on the 2007 Trojans and only the third player
under Pete Carroll's Trojan tenure to lift over 500
lb, he had only started lifting weights since he was
15 (6 years as of 2007) because his father would not
allow him to lift at a younger age.Other
Possibilities: Keith Rivers, Derrick Harvey
|
5.056 |
|
10.
New Orleans
 |
Leodis McKelvin,
CB, Troy
HEIGHT:
6-3 WEIGHT: 220
The Saints defense was
just horrendous in the back 7 last year. They signed
Randall Gay and now they get McKelvin and the
defensive backs are suddenly elite.
McKelvin is one
of the best defensive backs in the draft. He has
everything you look for in a CB. Decent size, good
speed, good hips, and a fluid backpedal; the only
real knock on McKelvin is his hands. He gets his
hands on a lot of balls, but cant seem to catch at
all. He was a true shutdown corner in college as he
hardly ever even got thrown toward as a senior also
holding down his numbers, but with DB's many times
the numbers mean nothing for that very reason. He
also is an explosive punt returner.
Notes: McKelvin was only a two year starter and
has a lot of upside.
Other
Possibilities: Aqib Talib, Mike Jenkins,
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Keith
Rivers
|
6.067 |
|
11.
Buffalo
 |
Devin Thomas, WR, Michigan St.
 HEIGHT:
6-2 WEIGHT: 215
Devin Thomas is our fastest
rising prospect this year, he has come from the
lower first all the way to 11 because he has the size, speed and the
hands teams desire.
Thomas has above average size to go with the speed
to get behind a defense and when you watch him lay
what you see is Dwayne Bowe and that style seems to
be working out nicely. Other
Possibilities: Malcolm Kelly, Mario Manningham,
Keith Rivers |
7.083 |
|
12.
Denver
 |
Ryan Clady, OT,
Boise State (JR)
HEIGHT:
6-6 WEIGHT: 320
With the retirement
of Matt
Lepsis,
the left tackle position becomes a need with
Ryan Harris and Erik Pears at the two tackle
positions, that could really be hazardous to Jay
Cutler's health. Clady is a potential
franchise LT with a huge frame and good athleticism.
At 6’6, 320 his quick feet and decent strength make
him a potential steal this late in the first round.
Had he stayed a year he most likely would be a top 5
pick next year. Clady has ideal
size and when he gets his hands on the defender he
locks him completely out. He does struggle against
speed rushers and that could hurt him at the next
level. Still has room to grow.
Notes: First-team
All-America by the AFCA and the Sporting News,
second-team All-America by the Walter Camp
Football Foundation and SI.com and third-team
All-America by Rivals.com
Other
Possibilities: Keith Rivers, Chris Williams, Jeff Otah, Kentwan
Balmer, deSean Jackson
|
7.500 |
|
13.
Carolina
 |
Derrick Harvey, DE,
Florida (JR)
HEIGHT:
6-4 WEIGHT: 262
Harvey is a hybrid defensive end/ linebacker who can
play both right defensive end in a 4-3 and rush
linebacker in a 3-4. He is quick and will give some speed coming off the edge.
Notes: Harvey started football late, in
junior year of high school so he still has a lot of
learning to do, but also has a lot of upside.
Other
Possibilities: Rashard Mendenhall, Jeff Otah, Kenny Phillips, Ryan
Clady
|
8.639 |
|
14.
Chicago
 |
Jeff Otah, OT,
Pittsburgh
HEIGHT:
6-6 WEIGHT: 340
In this mock,
the Bears address their second biggest need, the
offensive line. None of the other QB's warrant a
first round pick.
Otah can be a
mauler in the run game but has also shown flashes of
being a fleet-footed blindside protector, and could
grow into a LT of the future. The Bears may
look to trade up if they get a chance at Ryan by
some miracle, or if Brohm is here they may take him
as well, but he is really grading out to an early
2nd rounder at this point.
Notes: Might just have a higher upside
than any o-linemen in this draft since he started
playing football only as a high school senior.
Other
Possibilities: Brian Brohm, Aqib
Talib, Chris Williams
|
9.972 |
|
15.Detroit
 |
Rashard Mendenhall,
RB, Illinois (JR)
HEIGHT:
5-11 WEIGHT: 224
Current starter Tatum
Bell has terrific speed and is an elusive back, but
lacks the power to hold up as a feature back.
Mendenhall would give the Lions the type of
tough runner that can move the chains and the speed
to stretch the field.
Mendenhall is a tough
runner with good vision and adequate quickness,
along with the ability to get yards after contact,
an offensive playmaker.
Other
Possibilities: Jonathon Stewart, Aqib Talib, Mike Jenkins, Sam Baker, Jeff Otah, Some wide receiver (it is still Detroit after
all)
|
10.181 |
|
16.
Arizona
 |
Jonathon Stewart,
RB, Oregon (JR)
HEIGHT:
6-0 WEIGHT: 230
Yes we know he had surgery and will be out til July.
So What? Jonathon Stewart is just an amazing specimen and had
he stayed a year would be the consensus number one
next year. He is like Superman or something at 6-0
and 230 lbs and freakishly fast and strong (4.34 40
yard time!) He will be a better NFL back than
McFadden.
You could switch the Lions and Cardinals picks and
it would surprise no one.
Other
Possibilities: Derrick Harvey, Mike Jenkins, Aqib
Talib, Rashard Mendenhall
|
10.597 |
|
17.
Kansas City
(from Minnesota)
 |
Phillip Merling,
DE, Clemson
HEIGHT:
6-05 WEIGHT: 280Merling
brings speed, size, and athleticism where he could
be the premier sackmaster to replace the departed
for this pick Jared Allen. Other
Possibilities: Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Calais Campbell,
BPA the Chiefs need help everywhere
|
10.681 |
|
18.
Houston
 |
Chris Williams, OT,
Vanderbilt
HEIGHT:
6-06 WEIGHT: 320
Chris Williams,
a big lineman who at
6’6, 320, has ideal size to play OT at the NFL
level. Versatile, smart, and aggressive, Williams
was the leader of the Vanderbilt offensive line and
really improved his stock with a stellar senior
season and a great week at the Senior Bowl
Other
Possibilities:
Aqib Talib, Jonathon Stewart, Rashard Mendenhall
|
11.139 |
|
19.
Philadelphia
 |
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie,
CB, Tenn. State
HEIGHT:
6-02 WEIGHT: 178Dominique is a super fast
and talented Division 1AA prospect that can play
corner or safety. Should run under 4.40 at the NFL
Scouting Combine he plays like his brother Antonio,
another sleeper. He was by far the best corner at
the Senior bowl. He was awarded the Under Armour New
Prototype Award for his play in the 2008 Senior Bowl
where he played mostly free safety. He showed speed
and height, but also elite ball skills.
Other
Possibilities: DeSean Jackson, Limas Sweed, Malcolm Kelly,
Phillip Merling, Lawrence Jackson, Mike Jenkins
|
13.097 |
|
20.
Tampa Bay
 |
Mike Jenkins, CB,
South Florida
HEIGHT:
6-0 WEIGHT: 197
This is a fall for Jenkins, and
Tampa has a need in
the secondary with Ronde Barber nearing the end of
his career and Phillip Buchanan a bit of a wild
card, the
speedy and physical,
Jenkins excels in man-to-man coverage and would
immediately challenge for a starting spot. He has
improved consistency over entire career since an
injury kept him out as a freshman
Other
Possibilities: Kentwan Balmer, Aqib Talib, DeSean Jackson,
Jonathon Stewart. Malcolm Kelly, James Hardy
|
14.333 |
|
21.
Washington
 |
Calais Campbell,
DE, Miami (JR)
HEIGHT:
6-8 WEIGHT: 280The Skins could look to add
a wide receiver at this selection, especially with
DeSean Jackson available. But adding a
solid DE who can defend the run and rush the pass
will add a lot to the defensive line.
A giant of a man, Campbell can dominate when he
wants to, and although staying another year would
help him build character and technique, he is a
smart person, already having graduated with a degree
in Sociology, which made his decision to leave
school early easier for him.
Other
Possibilities: Kenny Philips, Phillip Merling,
DeSean Jackson,
Limas Sweed
|
16.097 |
|
22.
Dallas
(from Cleveland)
 |
Limas Sweed, WR,
Texas
HEIGHT:
6-05 WEIGHT: 219
At 6'5, 219, Sweed is
a huge red-zone threat and a match-up nightmare for
smaller DB's. He would fit well in the Cowboys
offense, it actually is just not quite fair to
imagine him opposite TO, that is a match up
nightmare for defenses.
Other
Possibilities: DeSean Jackson, Mario Manningham, Leodis McKelvin,
Aqib Talib, Reggie Smith, Malcolm Kelly
|
16.917 |
|
23.
Pittsburgh
 |
 Gosder
Cherilus, OT, Boston College
Pittsburgh's
line surrendered 47 sacks in 2007. The unit couldn't
even keep the Rams out of the backfield. It got
worse against the Jaguars, as Ben Roethlisberger was
sacked four times in the first 20 minutes. Now, Alan
Faneca is gone so we think they have to go OL here
and Cherilus is the best left on the board.
He should start in first year and
fits within the Steelers mold of tough, smart,
physical linemen. Other
Possibilities: Jerod Mayo, Jeff Otah
|
16.986 |
|
24.
Tennessee
 |
Jerod
Mayo, ILB, Tennessee
Mayo is an athletic
and versatile LB prospect with a lot of upside.
He is extremely physical
playing inside the box, has excellent range and a
quick burst as a blitzer that helped him collect 21
tackles behind the line of scrimmage during his last
two seasons at UT.
They have Bullock and Thornton, but
they need some youth there as well as some speed to
build some defensive consistency.Other
Possibilities: Mario Manningham, Adarius Bowman,
James Hardy
|
17.153 |
|
25.
Seattle
 |
Kentwan Balmer, DT,
North Carolina
HEIGHT:
6-05 WEIGHT: 295
Ballmer is a hustle player who
makes plays and is a terrific run stopper.
The interior of the defensive line
struggled in the playoffs, and Marcus Tubbs is
coming off an injury and return is questionable. In
our minds the Seahawks have
a lot of needs, but right now they cant even field a
receiving corps. Deion Branch is a solid receiver,
but he's coming off an ACL injury suffered in the
team's playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers and may
not be ready to play when the 2008 season begins and
Bobby Engram is 34 and can't go on forever so they
may go receiver here.
Other
Possibilities: Mike Jenkins, Jonathon Stewart,
Martellus Bennett, Rashard Mendenhall, Mario
Manningham
|
17.639 |
|
26.
Jacksonville
 |
Lawrence Jackson,
DE, USC
HEIGHT:
6-05 WEIGHT: 265
Jackson is a great physical specimen at 6'5" and
265 pounds he has excellent size for a defensive
end. He is a bit raw, but rushes the passer very
well. When Jackson does not sack the passer he does
a great job of stopping quarterbacks from completing
passes by either batting them down or intercepting
them and he can stop the run cold from a 3-4 end
spot.
Other
Possibilities: Early Doucet,
Limas Sweed, Mario Manningham, Malcolm Kelly
|
18.278 |
|
27.
San Diego
 |
Kenny Philips, FS,
Miami (JR)
HEIGHT:
6-2 WEIGHT: 210
The Chargers are talent rich, so they can take
the best available player who can fill several
needs. With Chris
Chambers now on board, the Bolts might want to look
at defense in the first round this year. Safety is a
need,
and Philips has
everything you want in a safety. By far the best
safety in the draft and quite possibly one of the
best defensive players in the draft as a Junior
available.
Other
Possibilities: Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie,
Dan Conner, James Hardy, Gosder Cherilous
|
18.653 |
|
28.
Dallas
 |
Felix Jones, RB,
Arkansas (JR)
HEIGHT:
6-0 WEIGHT: 200
Everyone thinks that
the Cowboys want McFadden, we are not so sure that
his backfield mate Jones is a better fit with Marion
Barber. Jones is lightning-quick with a great burst
and the speed to get out on the edge. Also a threat
as a kick-returner, Jones is a big-time playmaker
and would make for a great change of pace for
Barber.
Other
Possibilities: James Hardy, Malcolm Kelly
|
19.694 |
|
29.
San Francisco
(from Indianapolis)
 |
DeSean Jackson, WR,
California (JR)
HEIGHT:
5-11 WEIGHT:
172DeSean Jackson may be undersized
but he can stretch the field and is a special
athlete in the return game. We still think the
pathetic front 7 is not fixed, but the consensus
says its Jackson
Other
Possibilities: Gosder Cherilus, Quentin Groves, Malcolm Kelly,
Brian Brohm?, Chris Williams, James Hardy
|
20.000 |
|
30.
Green Bay
 |
Antoine Cason, CB,
Arizona
HEIGHT:
6-0 WEIGHT: 185
Arizona's Antoine Cason is a polished corner
with excellent skills. He will
be an immediate nickle back and will be playing a
lot in the first year as he gets to learn from two
of the best.
Other
Possibilities: Sam Baker, Quentin Groves,
Reggie Smith, Aqib Talib,
|
20.542 |

31.
No Pick
NWE forfeited pick for
spygate |
CHEATERS |
N/A |
|
32.
NY Giants
 |
Aqib Talib, CB,
Kansas (JR)
HEIGHT:
6-2 WEIGHT: 205
Talib is one of the top cover-men in the nation and
is just an all around playmaker even getting some
action at wide receiver. Aqib is a big corner
with good speed and ball awareness who can be
electrifying at times and sometimes just completely
busts a play as well. A lot of upside with a little
bit of Dale Carter swagger in him. Other
Possibilities: Aqib Talib, Antoine Cason, Trevor
Laws, Keith Rivers, Dan Conner
|
20.875 |
|
|
Dropped from previous mocks
|
Malcolm Kelly, WR,
Oklahoma (JR)
HEIGHT:
6-4 WEIGHT: 219
He was dominant at
the collegiate level and has rare size and
playmaking ability Kelly has the
potential to be a special player, as he combines
great size with good deep speed and excellent hands.
Kelly, at 6-4, with solid speed. |
|
Quentin Groves,
DE/LB,
Auburn
HEIGHT:
6-3 WEIGHT: 254
Groves has the size to
line up at OLB or DE and the speed to be an
effective edge rusher.
|
Dan Connor, OLB,
Penn State
HEIGHT:
6-03 WEIGHT: 230Connor earned All America honors
his junior and senior seasons at Penn State and
passed Nittany Lion great Paul Posluszny on November
3, 2007 to become #1 on Penn State's career tackles
list
|
|
James Hardy,
WR, Indiana (JR)
HEIGHT:
6-7 WEIGHT: 220 |
Mario Manningham,
WR, Michigan (JR)
HEIGHT:
6-00 WEIGHT: 178 Manningham is maybe the most complete
receiver in the 2008 draft. He doesn’t jump out in
any one area, but he has very few weaknesses. There
are receivers who are better in individual areas,
but he gives is a very good all around
receiving threat.
|
Reggie Smith,
S, Oklahoma (JR)
HEIGHT:
6-0 WEIGHT: 196
Reggie Smith of Oklahoma is a versatile
defensive back with the skills to be a first round
pick
|
|
Sam Baker, OT, USC
HEIGHT:
6-05 WEIGHT: 305
He
has good size and advanced technical skills, but
Baker was very disappointing in workouts at the
Senior Bowl. Was projected much higher and may move
back up with some good workouts,
the problem is that since he
is not a physical marvel, he may not be able to wow
people in workouts to move himself back up into the
Top 10 but he is still a safe bet in the first round
and depending on where he goes, could be a steal.
|
Brian Brohm, QB,
Louisville
HEIGHT:
6-4 WEIGHT: 224
The Packers have to
replace Favre and they might as well take a gamble. Brian Brohm took a big
gamble last season, and most likely it is going to
hurt him in his draft position. Our boards currently
have him 8th, but most likely without a monster
combine or pro day he is going to drop, maybe even
out of the first round. The consensus after the 2006
season was that he would have been the third
quarterback chosen after JaMarcus Russell and Brady
Quinn. Nothing he did as a senior is going to change
that, but there is just less need for quarterbacks
this year. What could help Brohm is that there are a
couple of teams that may be ready to give up on
young quarterbacks, if that happens he can go as
high as number 8.
Notes: Brohm was selected in
the MLB draft following his senior year in high
school.

About the SN DQI rankings
The Draft Quality Index rankings or DQI is a
proprietary scientific formula taking into account the draft rankings from over 50
different respected NFL sources. The sources are not made
public and you cannot ask to be included in these sources in
order to maintain the integrity of the system. These rankings are then compared and placed
into the database along with over 20 other factors rating each player based on
things like 40 time and Wonderlic score, all weighted against past performances of
similar NFL players for comparison to come up with a final DQI score. The DQI
score can be viewed most simply with the following breakdown:
1.000-7.500 - Star NFL player or a cant miss
prospect
7.501-15.000 - Very good NFL career with possibility of
developing into a star. Very small chance of a bust
15.001-22.500 - Could develop but player has at least one deficiency
holding them back. Good enough to stay in the NFL long term.
22.501-30.000 - Developmental or specialty player. May even be a
starter but is most likely a specialist such as a pass rusher. Most draft
busts come in this range as teams reach.
30.001-50.000 - Pure Project Player almost always taken in the second
round or later. When one slips into the first round they are almost always
considered a bust. Archives:
