New
England made some interesting moves
here, it appears that they are loading
up for another run, a very good draft,
but New England is a team that has
always been enamored with high character
players, so taking Meriweather and
trading for Randy Moss in the same draft
is somewhat out of character for them.
That said, talent-wise no one did any
better. They came up with a
much-needed safety in Brandon
Meriweather. They also came up with an
extra first-round pick next year in a
trade from San Francisco. They also got
a good possession receiver in Wes Welker
for a second and seventh rounder.
Finally, they got Randy Moss for a
fourth-round pick. No wonder they are so
good year after year.

Analysis
The
Patriots needed safety
help. Meriweather was
the best one left on the
board. Despite a few
character issues
Meriweather has first
round talent and fills a
real need for the Pats.

Analysis
He ran
a 5.27, but plays better
than his timed speed.
Nice size at 6' 4" 290
lbs. Might have the
athletic ability to play
End in the the Pats 34
defense.

Analysis
The
Patriots do a job of
identifying players who
are athletic with big
bodies whom they can
develop; Oldenburg is a
lot like Ryan
O'Callaghan. He’s a big
man with 5.22 speed who
will be a right tackle,
but not LT.

Analysis
This is the kind player
of player New England
likes. At SMU’s Pro Day,
which was held the day
after the Combine ended,
he worked out very good
in the drills they put
him through where he had
to play in space. This
is probably the first
SMU player who has been
drafted in years; it
goes to show you that
the program is on an
upswing. He has 4.79
speed.

Mike Richardson

Notre Dame
Analysis
He’s a versatile guy; he
can play cornerback, and
if he puts on weight, he
can play safety. He has
quickness (4.48) and he
knows how to play the
game.

Analysis
This is a running back
who started his college
career at Rutgers, and
in fact started ahead of
Brian Leonard in his
freshman season. He had
over 1,800 yards last
feason. He has speed
(4.52) and production --
it's nice to see a
player like this
available this late.

Analysis
He's a good pass
protector. He’s strong
and he’s an aggressive
run blocker. He’s
practically a clone of
Charlie Johnson, who
played very well for the
Colts in the Super Bowl
last season at right
tackle after Ryan Diem
got hurt. He might be
able to play guard and
center, too.
