The
Chargers went with a serious project
draft. This years class will either be a
big boom, or a huge bust led by Antonio
Cromartie who we had rated as the number
one CB with a big injury question mark. Marcus
McNeill is a very solid pick but also
has medical issues with his back and Charlie
Whitehurst is intriguing in his
potential.
We listed him first due to his
amazing potential, we feel he
will be the best of the group in
2 years time. He is a big play
type of player on the defensive
side, because he is the type of
player that finds a way to get
his hands on the ball and make
things happen, and he has the
speed and hands of a wide
receiver...more
Marcus is a
colossal tackle who would rather lay his man out
than contain him. Even if someone manages to survive
the first contact on his feet, McNeil has the
ability to hold them at bay with his massively long
arms. He is quite possibly the best run blocker
coming out this year although he occasionally has
trouble against speed rushers that avoid his first
shot...more
Beyond the top three there are some intriguing
prospects starting with Charlie Whitehurst. Charlie looked like a
potential top prospect early in his career but had a
horrible junior year before bouncing back in 2005.
Charlie is an old fashioned pocket passer who has
the tools to be very good. He needs to work on his
decision making skills under pressure and get rid of
the ball in a smart manner. He needs to be
coached, but has the tools, size, and arm strength
to get much better given time...more
A surprisingly
good football player who is
often around the ball and makes
a lot of tackles down the field.
He is shorter than ideal at just
over 6-1, but is very well built
with the playing strength to
stack the point of attack vs.
lead blockers. A solid pick but
nothing spectacular. He doesn't
make many big plays.
Clary has
surprisingly quick feet for a
6-foot-6 offensive tackle. He
can slide out to the corner to
cut off speed/edge rusher, and
once he locks up with both hands
in pass protection, he usually
eliminates his man.
An excellent
kickoff man. Played in 50
consecutive games as a starter.
Improved as a field-goal kicker
in accuracy in the 2005 season.
A wasted pick for camp
competition he can't beat out
Kaeding.
Chase has good
strength and good speed.
Everybody's looking now for big
guys with pass-rush ability to
play defensive tackle, and he's
one of those guys. Another
project.
Martin is a
player that was disappointing to
scout because he was a four-year
starting left tackle at a major
Division I college program, but
he is no doubt a limited athlete
who lacks the tools to start at
left tackle in the NFL. He will
be switched to center as a
project.
