New York Jets Draft Recap - 2006 NFL Draft
They passed on Leinart, which some say is a mistake, but they got two good players in D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Nick Mangold, another instant starter. They obviously wanted to build that offensive line after last years disaster. Adding a franchise left tackle just makes more sense. A lot of teams really like the upside of Kellen Clemens, who skyrocketed in personal workouts. Brad Smith played quarterback at Missouri, and he showed some good athletic ability. But he insisted he wanted to play quarterback in the NFL, and the Jets see him as a receiver he should be used in a Randle-El type mold.

Overall Grade: A-

Regardless of what some fans think the line is how you build a team, the franchise QB can wait, it does no good to get a franchise QB if you can't keep him upright see Houston Texans for example. Getting the number one Tackle and the number one Center and still getting a top 5 QB is a great draft.

Rd Sel# Player Pos. Ht. Wt. School
1 4 Ferguson, D'Brickashaw OT 6-6 313 Virginia
There is no question as to who the best tackle is this year, the only question may be is he the best player in the draft period. He dominated against the best at the Senior Bowl. While he isn't overpowering, his footwork and balance are so good that he keeps his man in front of him and keeps his opponent off balance with his long arms and large hands. Should be an almost unmatched pass-blocker after a few years in the NFL with his technique. Ferguson was talked about for months as being a potential first-round draft pick in the 2005 NFL draft, but Ferguson elected to stay with Virginia for his senior season and did nothing but improve his standing. Plus he has the best name for an offensive lineman...more
1 29 Mangold, Nick C 6-4 299 Ohio State
Mangold can make all the blocks that count. A devastating run blocker that blows defenders backwards he is nowhere near as good a pass blocker, but most centers are not. Mangold has made 21 straight starts and is ready to step in immediately and start for the next decade. This center will make all the calls before the snap and allow the line to play as a cohesive unit. He has the desired size you look for in a lineman, and even better, he has that nasty streak you look for along with the smarts to become something special. On a par with LeCharles Bentley...more
2 49 Clemens, Kellen QB 6-2 223 Oregon
In an unfortunate accident Senior Oregon QB Kellen Clemens was injured (broken Fibula) against Arizona on October 22 and is currently undergoing intense rehabilitation. He was one game away from breaking virtually all of the University of Oregon’s offensive passing records. Kellen is a gamer who may not have all the skills, but somehow always gets it done.  May never be a star but will be a very capable backup for someone...more
3 76 Schlegel, Anthony ILB 6-0 251 Ohio State
Schlegel is a tough and highly competitive linebacker, whose instincts enable him to consistently produce at a higher level than expected.
3 97 Smith, Eric SS 6-1 209 Michigan State
Smith is a tough and highly competitive safety. He has good instincts to read and react to the play quickly.
4 103 Smith, Brad WR 6-2 212 Missouri
He has very good size and good athletic ability to make the switch to receiver, and the things that will help him most are his tremendous work ethic and competitiveness. He is a very tough football player, who will not only play through pain, but he will develop into a receiver who will not hesitate to go across the middle to make tough catches in traffic.
4 117 Washington, Leon RB 5-8 202 Florida State
He is a very well built back with the power and strength to be an effective runner once he gets past the line of scrimmage.
5 150 Pociask, Jason TE 6-3 267 Wisconsin
Pociask is a strong and physical tight end who does a good job of blocking the head-up defensive end on outside runs and can get through to the second level to seal block the linebacker out of the play.
6 189 Coleman, Drew CB 5-8 183 Texas Christian
Coleman is a good athlete with very quick feet and playing speed. He is a smart and instinctive cornerback who consistently reads the quarterback/pass fast.
7 220 Adams, Titus DT 6-3 305 Nebraska
Adams is a quick-footed defensive tackle with the athleticism to make plays from sideline to sideline. He does a good job of getting off the ball quickly, reads the run away fast, accelerates to full speed and can chase down running backs in pursuit.
