Houston Texans Draft Recap - 2006 NFL Draft
Hats off to the Texans for having the cajones to do what they did. By passing on Reggie Bush, they made a statement that they were going to fill their needs and that they did. They got a potential stud defensive end in Mario Williams, an extremely productive linebacker in DeMeco Ryans and two offensive linemen who are still getting better in tackle Eric Winston and guard/tackle Charles Spencer. All that said we have to downgrade the score simply because you never ever pass on the franchise for potential, and even if you were going to you just know there was a trade to be made there.

Overall Grade: B- Would have been an A+ if it were Bush instead of Williams.

Rd Sel# Player Pos. Ht. Wt. School
1 1 Williams, Mario DE 6-7 294 North Carolina State
Williams has outstanding speed off the edge. The best pass rushing end coming out, he has been a starter since he stepped on campus as a freshman. At 6'7 and 280 pounds Williams can play on the end or on the inside as a tackle. Although with his quickness he most likely will be an end in the NFL. Williams is considered by some to be the second coming of Carolina's Julius Peppers. His rare combination of height, strength and overall athleticism is unheard of in someone 20 years old. Mario has been a starter in Raleigh since his freshman year starting every game of his career although he is still raw. The idea of him developing technique to go along with his physical gifts is scary...more
2 33 Ryans, DeMeco OLB 6-1 235 Alabama
DeMeco has an incredible burst for a linebacker that allows him to close in in a big hurry. While he's been excellent in run support, his strength may be dropping back into coverage, running well with running backs and tight ends very much like the Chiefs Derrick Johnson. DeMeco is a guy who has really gotten lost in all the great linebackers coming out in this draft. One thing that makes him stand above his peers in this draft is that he's been such a high-character guy and a team leader...more
3 65 Spencer, Charles OT 6-5 351 Pittsburgh
While he has very good athletic ability and competes hard on nearly every snap, his technique needs so much work that he gets beaten way too often by lesser athletes.
3 66 Winston, Eric OT 6-6 311 Miami (Fla.)
Eric has great size and the intelligence to play the tackle position, on the left or right. He is an all around athlete with great agility for his tall stature. Winston has great speed and quick feet. His big problem is still coming back from the ACL injury that cost him most of 2004 and affected his play in 2005.  The question is what will be the long term effects?...more
4 98 Daniels, Owen TE 6-3 243 Wisconsin
Daniels is a smooth, fluid athlete who runs sharp routes and can make plays as a receiver.
6 170 Lundy, Wali RB 5-11 213 Virginia
Lundy is a big, strong running back with the playing strength to keep his feet vs. hard hits, break tackles and gain yards after contact when he runs aggressively.
7 251 Anderson, David WR 5-10 193 Colorado State
Anderson is tough and highly competitive, and he plays with the energy and effort you do not see often in receivers. He is a good athlete with the hands and coordination to make all the catches and has shown a willingness to go into traffic to make the tough catch.
