Denver Broncos Draft Recap - 2006 NFL Draft
The Broncos got too cute for their own good with trades this year making a bunch of nonsensical moves for players they may or may not need. All the wheeling and dealing got Mike Shanahan the quarterback he coveted most, Jay Cutler, but what does that say to Jake Plummer?

Overall Grade: C+  They gave up way too much to get a QB they didn't need in round 1 and traded their 2nd pick for a receiver with knee problems. That could backfire. Why draft a QB in the first to destroy Plummers confidence? They pulled it up from an F with some nice later round steals in Brandon Marshall who is a tall receiver with good speed who will help a receiving group that needs a deep threat, as well as picking up Elvis Dumervil and Greg Eslinger who will end up as fixtures on their respective lines in a year or two.

Rd Sel# Player Pos. Ht. Wt. School
1 11 Cutler, Jay QB 6-3 225 Vanderbilt
Talk about a riser. We question how much is hype and how much is real.  Its not that Jay doesn't have all the tools you look for, it's just that you kind of have to throw away his college record because the team he was on was just horrible...more
2 61 Scheffler, Tony TE 6-5 255 Western Michigan
Scheffler is a tall tight end with the natural strength to be a good run blocker when he blocks aggressively and stays over his feet more of an H-back type than a true tight end.
4 119 Marshall, Brandon WR 6-4 230 Central Florida
Marshall is an interesting prospect when you see his height/weight/timed-speed combo and consider that he played defensive back until his senior season. He definitely is a very good developmental prospect.
4 126 Dumervil, Elvis DE 5-11 258 Louisville
Dumervil is a very good athlete with the quickness and pass-rush moves to consistently pressure and sack the quarterback when he gets off the ball well. The problem is he is inconsistent and lacks the height you look for in an end.
4 130 Hixon, Domenik WR 6-2 192 Akron
Hixon wasn't at the Combine, but he ran extremely fast at his school's Pro Day (under 4.4). Pure camp fodder or developmental prospect.
5 161 Kuper, Chris G 6-4 302 North Dakota
A big, athletic guard with the quick feet, agility and natural strength who is hard to find. He can get off the ball quickly and get through to the second level fast. However, he does not play even close to his level of ability and his heart is in question.
6 198 Eslinger, Greg C 6-3 291 Minnesota
Many have Eslinger rated above Mangold, and in college that was true, but in the NFL he will have some size problems unless he is in the perfect offensive system which he now is... more
