About Mike: Mike Williams is
one of the most talent receivers to come out in a long time. The question is if his year away
from the game will hurt him. He should be the first or second receiver drafted and is most
likely a top 10 pick on draft day.
Will always be remembered as the true victim in the Maurice Clarett vs. the NFL saga. He
followed all the rules and still got screwed over. |
Quick Summary:
Just a sophomore in 2003, Williams was one of the nation's most dynamic and dangerous wide
receivers. Overall in 2003 while starting all 13 games, he had 95 catches for 1,314 yards (13.8
avg.) and 16 TDs, plus he gained 26 yards on 3 rushes (8.7 avg.) off of backwards passes, completed
both of his pass attempts for 38 yards (including a 15-yard TD against Michigan in the Rose Bowl),
blocked a field goal and made a tackle.
Following his 2003 All-American season, he applied
for the NFL draft as a second-year sophomore based on a court ruling that struck down the NFL's
requirement that its players had to be out of high school for 3 years. But he was not selected
because of a judicial stay on that ruling. Then, when that ruling was overturned in the late spring,
he sought to have his collegiate eligibility restored by the NCAA (he had become ineligible because
he had signed with an agent and had not enrolled in classes in the 2004 spring semester). The
NCAA in what most feel was an extremely unfair ruling ruled against him leaving him in limbo for the
2004 season. Though this seemed to be very
bad news for Williams it may work out well after all as he was projected in the top 15 last year and
this year is consistently moving into the top ten due to a weaker group of wide receivers.
Combine Notebook:
Mike Williams is one of the best prospect of the 2005 draft class.
Before his attempt to enter last year's draft as a sophomore ultimately failed in the federal court
system, the former USC star was projected as a top 5 choice. He still looks as if he could be a top
10 this year, but after missing last season because his declaration to enter the 2004 draft made him
ineligible could work against him, thats what made his decision to refuse to work out at the combine
so strange. If Mike wanted to win over any NFL people, he should have been putting his skills on
display. Instead, he has only created more concern about the potential rust in his game.
Strengths: There may not be a better
physical specimen in the entire draft. On the football field, very few play as hard and physical as
Williams. He is unique because his biggest asset as a football player is his physical nature and
strength, which is not what you typically see in a wide receiver. He is not afraid to go over the
middle, and will make the difficult grab look routine.
Weaknesses: The only knock with Williams is his
lack of pure deep speed. He does not possess great speed, but it is not something that will hold him
back in the NFL. He will also have to shake off the rust after not playing in 2004 |
