Bankroll Management Tips: One of the more overlooked aspects of poker play may be bankroll management, even though hundreds of poker articles have been written about it. It may seem that if you are a good player, you do not need to worry too much about this issue...more

FemmeFan Weekly: Fourth of July, Our Independence Day
Ok, so this is America, the US of A. I love it. I respect it, I believe in it.

We are on the verge of a historical moment in the United States. We might elect the first African American to the most difficult, challenging and powerful position in the world.

How does that make you feel?... more

The 19th Hole

The 19th Hole: The Perry Parade?
Several weeks ago, Kenny Perry was the butt of many jokes in the media for his decision to skip playing the US Open at Torrey Pines because he did not want to play in a 36 hole qualifier and his personal distaste for the layout.  After winning the Memorial tournament, Perry said he was not going to change his schedule and that he would continue his season motivated by his desire to make the Ryder Cup team one last time.  At 48 years old, Perry would likely not have another opportunity to make a serious run at the team – much less at a course that he loves in Valhalla in his native Kentucky.... more

Each year the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association plays homage to the many players that have excelled during the course of the season under the lights with a spectacular awards show in Toronto, Canada.

On June 12th, Martin Brodeur, Sidney Crosby, Henrik Lundqvist and a handful of others are once again award finalists.  The three mentioned are no strangers to receiving awards.  Last year, Brodeur and Crosby were finalists for the Hart Trophy, which Crosby won and Brodeur and Lundqvist were finalists for the Vezina Trophy, which Brodeur went on to win..... more

Upon Further Review
By: Matt Yoder

Welcome to the latest edition of “Upon Further Review”, it’s the dead period for football and their fans.  Sure there’s OTA’s and mini-camps and all that stuff, but how exciting are those things really?  Guys wearing shorts, no contact, veterans not doing much other than stretching and running and having to watch rookies and guys not good enough to make the final roster practice.  Talk about a snooze fest. BUT, the fact of the matter is it all means football, real football, is creeping ever closer and that’s cause for excitement in itself.  With all that said, let’s take a look at some of the happenings from around the NFL recently, shall we?... more

Speaking of Sports

Speaking of Sports: TRS: The Real Story Behind the Garza-Navarro Meeting
The Tampa Bay Sports Net has in its possession the conversations between Rays’ pitcher Matt Garza and catcher Dioner Navarro on the mound, when Garza got a close-up look at what Navarro wears on his face, in the dugout when they met again and in the runway leading to the visitor’s clubhouse.

Without anyone’s knowledge, a miniature microphone was cleverly embedded in the catcher's mask padding and every word was heard across the Gulf of Mexico (when you are in an area loaded with 1,000-5,000 watt radio stations, you know you can hear them further out in the water to the west than you do over land to the east).

So without further adieu, TBSN brings you the complete blow-by-blow from start to finish..... more

Thinking Out Loud: Going To Hell In a Handbasket
Almost a month ago I penned a piece about the entertainment at Tropicana Field – (Rays Missing a Beat on In-house Fun) - and how the departure of John Franzone, a.k.a John the Maestro, has left a huge void inside the stadium.

Having been inside the House of the Tilted Roof this entire homestand, there has been something else that has been gnawing at me but I just couldn't put my finger on it until Sunday's homestand finale with the White Sox.... more

MLB Insider: The Call for Instant Replay
How many times have we as fans watched baseball games in which an umpire has obviously missed a call?  Personally, I’ve run out of fingers and toes to tally up.

All of us have been subjected to making some sort of error in the course of our lifetime – sometimes we own up to those mistakes, sometimes we just let it go.  For the most part, our errors don’t affect the outcome that it would in a professional game.

Umpires are only humans and they too make mistakes… but when you look at the other sports, such as the NHL, NFL, NBA, major tennis tournaments and even the NCAA – they all use a form of replay.... more

Thinking Out Loud: The Wacky World of the Steinbrenner’s
By: Ted Fleming, Tampa Bay Sports Net

Answer me this? How am I to explain Hank Steinbrenner to my grandchildren?

It's bad enough that I raised a son who became a Yankee fan - it was a Mets' household until I moved to Florida to join BaysBall Nation, and the so-called smart one of the twins went to the dark side (of New York blue) - but what's up with the new mouth of the north?

It appears for all all intents and purposes the little Hankie has all of his father's mouth but not the sense of his brother Hal, the Quiet Man, a dozen years his junior.

Not one month into the season the team's co-chairman effectively called his new manager an idiot.... more

The Armchair QB: A Way To Adjust The BCS Playoff
I took careful note of some of the positive things about the selection process. They have a committee that selects the teams based on a set of criteria. They have a “true playoff” in the form of the tournament and the team that can win six games is crowned the champion. Could this format work in college football. I believe it can and in the following article, I will explain how this can be done..... more

“The Heckler” on a Fan Speaks Out:  Ben Wallace and Aaron Gray Interview
And the man in the middle is Ben Wallace and Aaron Gray. So far Wallace is not playing like the guy who cost the team $60 million to pry him away from Detroit. Gray, while looking like a possible option in the pre-season, has does nothing but gather splinters since the season started. In this interview, Wallace comments on the teams’ chances to make the finals and what he did to improve in the off-season. Gray explains the difference in the pro game compared to college and if he regrets staying an extra year in college.... more

"The Heckler" on a Fan Speaks Out:
Jim Hendry Interview - 2007
With the Cubs on the brink of the playoffs, Jim Hendry wears the hero crown again. But the last two years, with the team a big disappointment, he wore the goat horns, asking why he didn’t do more to improve the club. In this interview, he addresses the issue if his hands were tied by Andy MacPhail, just what Alfonso Soriano was promised when the Cubs signed him, his thoughts on Lou Piniella, and what player surprised him this year.... more

Inflated Numbers and an Inflated Head
This is my response to Jesse Jackson writing into the Chicago Tribune and saying that Barry Bonds’ achievements should not be minimized

In last weeks Other Views column, the Rev. Jesse Jackson conveniently failed to examine all of the facts before asking the readers to pay homage to the feat Barry Bonds is about to accomplish. He constantly referred to the pre-1947 era, but Bonds is about to pass Hank Aaron’s record, not Babe Ruth...more

NFL Power Rankings: Final 2007 Regular Season Rankings
Really right now, it's New England's world and we’re just living in it. Someone may knock them off, but until they do, we all bow down to the kings of the NFL. 2 More Records Fall During Olympic Trials

Michael Phelps just missed setting another world record at the U.S. Olympic trials.

Even though it wasn't Ryan Lochte vs. Michael Phelps Part III, it was still a nail biter, with Phelps coming just short of his record time. He still made the best time in the 200m freestyle trial at 1.44.10 -- his world record is 1.43.86. He also qualified for the finals in the 200m butterfly.

Can We Trust The NBA Anymore?

Did game two of the finals seem familiar to anyone? Following a 38-10 discrepancy in free throws in Boston's favor in Game 2, disgraced former NBA ref larry Donaghy's legal team seized the moment to publicly outline new allegations of altered games, including a pair of specific examples: a 2005 playoff series between the Houston Rockets and the Dallas Mavericks, and the infamous Game 6 of the Western Conference finals in 2002...

NBA Age Limit - A Blessing in Disguise
The 2007 NBA draft class was the most hyped and highly covered of any draft class in the last five years and maybe even this decade - and 9 of the 10 first picks were still teenagers.
