Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Coverage on SportzNutz

 NCAA Quick Hits

SportzNutz 2006 WAC Football Preview

Even with a new head coach, Boise State received all but one vote to win the conference. Positions 2, 3 and 4 had each team receiving at least one vote to finish in any of the positions. San Jose State was the most disagreeable squad for most to figure, being thought to finish anywhere from 5th place to last. Don’t miss what might be the most entertaining game of the opening weekend on Friday September 1, when Fresno State hosts Nevada in a HUGE revenge spot.

NCAA unfairly targeting mid-major schools?

The USA Today has an exceptionally interesting follow-up story to the May release of the 2008 Academic Progress Rates (APR) results of the Division I schools. What makes this article particularly interesting is that it more fully vets the notion that the BCS conference receive favorable consideration from the NCAA.

Citing analysis from the Knight Commission, the USA Today article states that BCS conference teams only half as likely to be punished as non-BCS teams for failing to meet the assigned APR minimums.

"The NCAA's heart is in the right place. They want to improve the academic performance ...

Breaking down the schedules - Cupcake City 08 Edition

One look at the "major" conference schedules shows... an awful lot of "minors".

Who schedules the most cupcakes? Here's a breakdown of the non-conference schedules for each of the BCS conference teams, with games against FCS schools (ie DI-AA cupcakes) highlighted.

ACC - 14 cupcakes
Big XII - 10 cupcakes
Big 10 - 9 cupcakes
SEC - 9 cupcakes
Big East - 7 cupcakes
Pac 10 - 2 cupcakes

(For reference, here's how it looked in 2004, when the ACC & Big East were Kings of the Cupcakes.)

HT: OU-Ron

Note: I incorrectly noted the FCS acronym in the original post. I have updated it as per your comments. I still have no idea why we can't call the DI-AA the DI-AA, but... I digress.

Choose your weapon: Cigars of the coaching elite

The men from The Rivalry, Esq. have put together a great, tongue-in-cheek look at the cigar preferences of several of coaching's elite.

John Galsworthy's famous observation, "By the cigars they smoke, and the composers they love, ye shall know the texture of men's souls," is not lost on this fan.

What follows is a tongue-in-cheek review of four modern coaches at top ebb and their predicted smoke of choice.

NICK SABAN
Gurkha "His Majesty's Reserve" (HMR) (7.5'' x 52)

This royal entry holds the distinction of being the most expensive cigar in the world. At $750.00 a piece (a box of 20 is available for $14,999.95 at Cigar.com) the HMR is accessible to only a handful of elites. Fortunately, Nick Saban's paycheck at ...

Fresno State turns down $1.8 million for shot at $1 million

Fresno State boosters (if there is a thing) should bookmark this page the next time the athletic department tries to pass the collection plate, as the Bulldogs turned down a $1.8 million dollar package to move their game with Wisconsin to Lambeau Field.

How eager are Fresno State officials to host the University of Wisconsin next season in football?

So eager that they turned down an offer from a third party to move the Sept. 13 non-conference game against UW from Fresno to Lambeau Field for a payday in excess of $1 million.

"It was a private promoter several years ago and the money was pretty good," Steve Weakland, director of Fresno State media relations, said Wednesday. "It was seven figures."

"We declined."

But... there are also reports ...

Study finds harmless NCAA penalties are harmless

From the department of "no-duh" comes this great find by Senator Blutarsky: NCAA penalties do not hurt schools' win-loss records.

The "major penalties" imposed on college football teams who violate NCAA rules — including TV and bowl bans and scholarship reductions — have no impact on the teams' won-lost records, a researcher told the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics on Tuesday.

There was no statistical difference in on-field performance between the five years prior to the NCAA penalties and the five years following them, said Chad McEvoy, coordinator of the sports management program at Illinois State University.

Even as the penalties increase in severity - the loss of 10 scholarships ...
