Southeastern Conference (SEC) Coverage on SportzNutz

 NCAA Quick Hits

SportzNutz 2006 SEC Football Preview

SEC Coverage on SportzNutzThe “Urban” renewal project is evidently ready for Florida under Coach Meyer, being the top choice in the East. Georgia and the Volunteers are expected to compete, with Tennessee thought to be a possible surprise team. To think Tommy Tuberville was almost run out of Auburn a few seasons ago, now he has one of the elite programs in the country. Thou picked just 4th narrowly in the West; do not discount the Razorbacks who return 19 starters, including 4 linemen on each side of the ball. When coach Houston Nutt is underappreciated and talented, his Arkansas teams are tough to beat.

SEC to lower admission standards

Senator Blutarsky brings word that the SEC has lowered its admission standards to match the NCAA minimum and will allow member schools to begin admitting non-qualifiers on a case-by-case basis.

At its most recent meetings in Destin, Fla., the SEC apparently relaxed its rules concerning non-qualifiers. I was in Destin but missed that development, as did most of the other reporters there, none of whom (at least as far as I have seen in extensive on-line searching) mentioned it at the time. It's only been referenced in stories about Powe. But here is what Ole Miss athletics director Pete Boone had to say about the change.

'Basically, the SEC's initial eligibility rules will generally mirror the NCAA's, which allow some non-qualifiers to attend school and try to get their ...

NCAA unfairly targeting mid-major schools?

The USA Today has an exceptionally interesting follow-up story to the May release of the 2008 Academic Progress Rates (APR) results of the Division I schools. What makes this article particularly interesting is that it more fully vets the notion that the BCS conference receive favorable consideration from the NCAA.

Citing analysis from the Knight Commission, the USA Today article states that BCS conference teams only half as likely to be punished as non-BCS teams for failing to meet the assigned APR minimums.

"The NCAA's heart is in the right place. They want to improve the academic performance ...

Breaking down the schedules - Cupcake City 08 Edition

One look at the "major" conference schedules shows... an awful lot of "minors".

Who schedules the most cupcakes? Here's a breakdown of the non-conference schedules for each of the BCS conference teams, with games against FCS schools (ie DI-AA cupcakes) highlighted.

ACC - 14 cupcakes
Big XII - 10 cupcakes
Big 10 - 9 cupcakes
SEC - 9 cupcakes
Big East - 7 cupcakes
Pac 10 - 2 cupcakes

(For reference, here's how it looked in 2004, when the ACC & Big East were Kings of the Cupcakes.)

HT: OU-Ron

Note: I incorrectly noted the FCS acronym in the original post. I have updated it as per your comments. I still have no idea why we can't call the DI-AA the DI-AA, but... I digress.

Choose your weapon: Cigars of the coaching elite

The men from The Rivalry, Esq. have put together a great, tongue-in-cheek look at the cigar preferences of several of coaching's elite.

John Galsworthy's famous observation, "By the cigars they smoke, and the composers they love, ye shall know the texture of men's souls," is not lost on this fan.

What follows is a tongue-in-cheek review of four modern coaches at top ebb and their predicted smoke of choice.

NICK SABAN
Gurkha "His Majesty's Reserve" (HMR) (7.5'' x 52)

This royal entry holds the distinction of being the most expensive cigar in the world. At $750.00 a piece (a box of 20 is available for $14,999.95 at Cigar.com) the HMR is accessible to only a handful of elites. Fortunately, Nick Saban's paycheck at ...

Kentucky sporting new uniforms (again)

Stop me if you've heard this before (you have, btw), but the Kentucky Wildcats have unveiled new football jerseys.

The new Nike designs do away with the alternate color pinstriping along the shoulderpads a la the Wildcats basketball uniforms that was unvieled for the 2004 season.

The new uni's feature a more distinct two-fabric design across the shoulders, with a "cat slash" alternating color along the side. Overall, the effect is quite good looking, breaking up an otherwise plain design.

But... don't get too worked up over the ...

Study finds harmless NCAA penalties are harmless

From the department of "no-duh" comes this great find by Senator Blutarsky: NCAA penalties do not hurt schools' win-loss records.

The "major penalties" imposed on college football teams who violate NCAA rules — including TV and bowl bans and scholarship reductions — have no impact on the teams' won-lost records, a researcher told the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics on Tuesday.

There was no statistical difference in on-field performance between the five years prior to the NCAA penalties and the five years following them, said Chad McEvoy, coordinator of the sports management program at Illinois State University.

Even as the penalties increase in severity - the loss of 10 scholarships ...
