Conference USA Coverage on SportzNutz

 NCAA Quick Hits

SportzNutz 2006 Conference USA Football Preview

Central Florida is expected to be the dominant team in the C-USA, not only in the division, but in the entire league. That fact is the Golden Knights have 9 starters back on each side of the ball along with senior QB Steve Moffett has something to do with it. USM garnered virtually all the 2nd place votes. The last four teams in the East is a boat race, with opinions all over the board. In the West, UTEP and defending champion Tulsa actually tied, with the Miners earning the edge due to more 1st places votes. The other four teams in the South were nearly 100% in fixed positions. This conference is known for almost every team being very good as a home favorite or underdog.

Cha-ching: Top 10 football revenue schools

Street & Smith's SportsBusiness Journal unveiled the top ten football revenue schools for 2007-2008 and - not surprisingly - the list is dominated by schools in the South and Midwest... just as it has been every since we started blogging these results for 2003-2004.

Top 10 Football Revenue Schools for 2007-2008

1. Texas $72.95 million
2. Georgia $67.05 million
3. Florida $66.1 million
4. Ohio State University $65.16 million
5. Notre Dame $59.77 million
6. Auburn $59.67 million
7. Michigan $57.46 million
8. Alabama $57.37 million
9. Penn State $53.76 million
10. Louisiana State University $52.68 million

For comparison sake, the Longhorns were also number one for football revenue in 2003... with "just" $47.55 million. Missing since the 2003 top ten? Tennessee. ...

The thought that won't go away.

A few months back I presented a pithy college football structure in a comment that has grown more endearing to me at time has passed. I still stand by my primary proposal, but this concept is currently my #2 option. #3 would be an Australian rules football like structure.

The current system is near dead last, just above whatever mess congress could create that would not fix anything and lose money.

Premise
If the current system is valuable because it maintains the value nd intensity of the regular season and the rich tradition of the bowls, why not maximize the value of both?

The basic idea is to maintain the traditional conferences but allow the top teams to represent their conferences in regional elite leagues. This would involve 10 round-robin matches 5 home and 5 away, and allow participants to maintain 2 traditional rivalries. The leagues would thus have 11 members each.

Will C-USA get their day?

Back when the BCS started the WAC was splitting into two conferences due to over expansion and there was great uncertainty over the future of each. This left C-USA as the most stable and competitive conference without an automatic qualification.

The loss of Louisville, Cincinnati and South Florida in 2005 to the Big East put a significant dent in C-USA's elite teams. TCU, who had been a member since 2001, left in 2005 for the MWC and C-USA then picked up UCF, Marshall, Rice, SMU, UTEP and Tulsa to form the conference that exists today.

The MWC has emerged as a serious contender for an eventual BCS automatic qualification but even the WAC has sent two teams to the BCS. Will C-USA get their turn at the BCS tables? What chance does C-USA have of making a BCS bowl this year?

The conference championship game is not included in conference rankings by C-USA.
Unless specified a team will likely need to go undefeated ...

2009 Spring Game Attendance Numbers

The Birmingham News must have a ton of interns scouring team press releases and scanning every beat writer. That's the only think I can think of to explain how they were able to compile spring game attendance statistics for 2009.

Some highlights:

- Ohio State "won" the annual spring game attendance battle. Although there is a growing tendency towards hyped & inflated numbers, there's little doubt that the Buckeyes had a huge turnout. The Ohio State University announced the crowd as 95,722.

- The SEC averaged 37,936 per game. TBN notes that is "more than 55 Division I-A schools averaged in 2008 regular-season attendance." Damn.

- Despite big numbers by tOSU and Penn State, the Big10 only managed second in average attendance (30,117), followed by the Big 12 (20,449), ACC (14,715), Big East ...

Utah AG riding BCS lawsuit to higher political office?

Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff confirmed last week that he has yet to file a case, but still intends to proceed with a lawsuit against the BCS.

Shurtleff told KUTV that the case would cost millions to pursue, but he is hopeful that the federal government and other states will join the case to reduce the burden to Utah's taxpayers.

"The next step is to talk to the Department of Justice, and see if they will lead on this suit," Shurtleff said.

But... as fate would have it... Shurtleff's announcement on the case comes just days before he is expected to announce his candidacy for higher political office... and just days following a $300-per-plate ...

Miami ... Congressional hearings on BCS prove to be a joke

On the day after Congress held hearings on swine flu, a House subcommittee set out to investigate the Bowl Championship Series. The results? Congressional leaders proved they know very little about college football, and even less about the BCS.

The House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection hosted the hearings. Of the twenty-nine House members on the committee, three showed up to participate

The hearing leader, Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.), introduced the key guest, BCS coordinator John Swofford, as the commissioner of the Athletic Coast Conference. Rep. Rush, I pretty sure it's the Atlantic Coast Conference, although they do play athletics, so I guess we'll give you partial credit, Congressman.

Craig Thompson was introduced as the commissioner of the West Mountain. Seriously? The West Mountain? Is Thompson the chief ski ...
