SportzNutz 2006 Big East Football Preview

Big East Coverage on SportzNutzNo real surprises with the Mountaineers thought to be a national contender. Louisville came into the league last season as the favorite and though they did not win the conference, the Cardinals still had a very good season. Now the Cards can play the hunter instead. For long time football fans it is nothing short of amazing to see Rutgers and especially Syracuse picked to finish where they are.

Ranking the Refs

Which conferences have the worst refs? Here are my thoughts:

Worst:
PAC 10: Too many games with boosters for the home team as the umpire leading to questionable calls that make a difference.

Second Worst:
Big East: Tried to give WV the win against Pittsburgh last year. Pittsburgh beat WV and the refs.

Third Worst:
SEC: Bad calls everywhere, but at least they hit both sides about evenly.

Refs are like field goal snappers, you usually only notice them when they mess up. Maybe I am forgetting serious grievances, but I haven't noticed the refs of the ACC, MAC, Big 10 or Sun Belt to often.

Best:
Big 12, MWC, WAC: Working together to set a higher bar for officiating nationally. NOTE: C-USA will be joining next year.

Road Warriors: How far will teams travel in 2008?

Rivals.com's Olin Buchanan pulled out his handy-dandy schedule guide and got onto Mapquest.com to see which college football teams travel the most for the 2008 season. The results are probably not that shocking (does it ruin it if I say #1 is from the WAC?) but there are some surprises when you go through the list.

Surprise #1? Ten of the top 14 travel distances belong to BCS teams.
Surprise #2? Nineteen of the bottom 22 are BCS teams.

Note: These are DRIVING DISTANCES, so Hawaii is not included.
Note: Because there is no bridge to Hawaii. Seriously.

Which college football teams travel the most miles for games in 2008?

1. Fresno State 18,190 miles
2. UTEP 15,016
3. Florida International 14,692
4. Florida Atlantic 14,534
5. Louisiana Tech 13,648
6. Notre Dame 13,348
7. Oregon State 13,278

Ranking the top college football coaching jobs

With the 2008 college football season starting in less than a week, it's time to check in with the state of college football and rank the top coaching jobs in the country.

I'm basing my list simply on perceived stature, which I believe is generally more static than factors such as current roster, current salary, and other more dynamic factors.

The Top College Football Coaching Jobs

1. Notre Dame - The most visible head coaching job in the country, with (arguably) the top legacy and traditions in all of college football.

2. Texas

3. Michigan

4. Ohio State

5. Oklahoma

6. USC

7. Nebraska

8. Alabama

9. Florida

10. Georgia

11. Florida State

12. Miami

13. UCLA

14. Penn State

15. Tennessee

16. Texas A&M

17. LSU

18. Iowa

19. Wisconsin

20. Colorado

The Worst #1 Ranked Teams in History

The good folks at Maxim Magazine have complied a pretty damn good list of the worst preseason #1 teams in college football history. Enjoy.

5. University of Pittsburgh, 1982
Finished: 9-3 (AP No. 10)
Pitt enjoyed its greatest success ever under coach Jackie Sherrill, finishing 11-1 in each of the previous three seasons. Still, there evidently wasn't a doubt in anyone's mind that, after he fled for Texas A&M to become the highest paid coach ever, Pitt and its senior QB Dan Marino wouldn't miss a five-step drop. Out went Sherrill, in stepped the legendary Serafino "Foge" Fazio... right into the steaming pile of Pitt's first three-loss season in four years. AP voters are worse than values voters.

4. Penn State, 1997
Finished: 9-3 (AP No. 16)
For a team boasting football's second all-time winningest ...

Beyond Polls: Where do the top teams stand?

With the 2008 Preseason Coaches Football Poll and 2008 Preseason AP Football poll in the books for the upcoming football season, it's time to drill down a little deeper into the polls and determine where the nation's top ranked college football teams stand in the eyes of the poll voters.

To get a better feel for where teams really stand in the eyes of the poll voters, we'll look at the actual poll ranking, and then the highest and lowest ballot positions for each of the top teams.

It is apparent that there is an elephant in the blog and we need to address the issue before the season starts. Maybe I just like swinging baseball bats at hornets nets.

Which teams deserve a promotion to a BCS conference and why?

Shortly a thread will be created to determine which benchmarks best measure the performance of a conference. A thread will be created after the BCS polls are first ...

Should the MWC expand?

This thread considers he benefit for the MWC should it choose to expand. The expansion considered involves three teams, Boise State, Fresno State and Houston. This would give the MWC TV markets in Houston and a larger fan base in California.

Why these teams:
Boise State has the inside track on any MWC expansion and owns the Idaho market.

While San Diego is significantly larger than Fresno, the Bulldogs carry a greater percent of their market and have a greater name nationally than SDSU. The argument is stronger with regards to San Jose State.

This would give six teams in the western division, Boise State, BYU, Fresno State, SDSU, UNLV and Utah. To be geographically aligned they would need another team for the eastern division. Tulsa and Houston both are good options but Houston brings more TV dollars. The eastern division would ...

Conference Preview

Miami and Virginia Tech are gone and Connecticut is in, leaving just 7 teams this year.  Next year Boston College leaves and Temple is being evicted.  Louisville, Cincinnati and South Florida join next year bringing it back to eight, albeit a much weakened 8.  This leaves an opening for some teams who have been consistently losing the Big East's BCS slot to Miami and Virginia Tech.  But make no mistake about it, this is a league in trouble.  The Big East is in danger of being regarded as a mid major rather than one of the big boys if some team doesn't step it up and assert itself.  The league has 6 bowl deals and most likely will be unable to fill all it's slots this year.

2004 Football Previews
#34 - Connecticut Huskies
The Huskies are starting to build a great program and the recruiting class this year was a sign of the direction this football team is going. With Miami (Fla.) and Virginia Tech gone in 2004 and Boston College gone in 2005, the timing to establish themselves as an elite program could not be better. This team is out to prove the 9-3 mark in 2003 was no fluke and this year they hope to get a bowl birth....more

#35 - Boston College Eagles
This will be the final year for the Eagles in the Big East before they bolt for the ACC in 2005, a move that will give the ACC 12 teams and the right to host a conference Championship Game. This team has a few areas where they need help and are a question mark but the offensive and defensive lines are so good that they could end up winning the Big East in 2004....more

Pittsburgh Panthers 2004 Preview
Walt Harris will defiantly earn his paycheck this year as coach of the Panthers. Harris saw a lot of talent leave the school after last season but he should get a break with a weakened division for 2004 allowing him to retool for the future....more

Rutgers Scarlet Knights 2004 Preview
Rutgers looks like a team that could really make some noise in the Big East once some of the heavyweights drop by the wayside. If the defense holds up this team could be very good and surprise more than just Syracuse....more

Syracuse Orangemen 2004 Football Preview
This is a big year for Syracuse but they dont have a quarterback on their roster with a completed pass in their college careers. Syracuse can run the ball effectively but they need to establish balance on offense to keep opposing defenses honest. This team should finish right around .500 like a year ago....more

Temple Owls 2004 Preview
This will be the final season for Temple in the Big East as they move to Independent status for 2005. This team can win some games with solid defensive play up front and a healthy dose of Walter Washington at quarterback both passing and running the football. Temple has yet to see a bowl game since the 1979 campaign and that will continue. I do see this team at least tripling their win total from a year agoby tripling I mean going from one to at least three....more
