Big East Conference Coverage on SportzNutz

SportzNutz 2006 Big East Football Preview

Big East Coverage on SportzNutzNo real surprises with the Mountaineers thought to be a national contender. Louisville came into the league last season as the favorite and though they did not win the conference, the Cardinals still had a very good season. Now the Cards can play the hunter instead. For long time football fans it is nothing short of amazing to see Rutgers and especially Syracuse picked to finish where they are.

Tie Breakers - A Critique

The conference tiebreakers can be found here. That tread was intended to be informative, presenting the rules as they are without commentary. With the discussion about the Big 12 conference championship tiebreakers one could ask, what are good tiebreakers?

Here are my thoughts.

Conference tie breakers used:
Settle it on the field
- Head to head among tied teams
- Results vs opponents within the same division with the best record, repeated through the team with the worse record.

These two are the most consistently used in college football. Head to head chooses to let the dispute be settled on the field at the price of selecting the team that lost to the worst them. These tiebreakers favor an inconsistent team that plays up to a good team and down to a bad team over a team that plays at a consistent level throughout the season. It ...

Should Boise State be in the BCS?

First of all, there are ten BCS spots so it would seem that the top 10 in the BCS should be in a BCS bowl. Boise State will be in the top 10, so they should be in a BCS Bowl.

The talk last year about teams from conferences like the WAC and MWC needing to soften their schedule to Hawaii like levels to improve their chances of an undefeated season and a BCS berth are silenced. Two undefeated teams, Boise State and Ball State, are likely to miss the BCS this year because a team with a more difficult schedule sits above them.

TCU will become the first team from outside the big 6 to qualify for an at large spot with a loss, and they did it with two losses. They would certainly have been ahead of Ball State with another win, showing even in these conferences differences in schedule can count for more than a single loss in the BCS.

Utah will be higher than Boise State in the BCS and earn the single guaranteed spot. ...

And the next head coach is...

Here are the latest updates on several college football head coach vacancies:

SYRACUSE: Oregon OC Chip Kelly is on the Orange's radar and will interview for the head coaching position this week. Illinois offensive coordinator Mike Locksley interviewed for the position last week, according to Rivals.com. Other likely candidates are Buffalo coach Turner Gill, East Carolina coach Skip Holtz, Florida assistant head coach Steve Addazio and New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Doug Marrone.

WASHINGTON: Fresno State head coach Pat Hill took a flight to Washington yesterday. Rumors are swirling that Hill is a candidate for the ...

Updated 2008 Bowl Game Predictions

First and foremost, I need to offer up a confession. The last time I spit out my bowl game predictions - they stunk. Those things reeked worse than LSU's and Texas Tech's defense combined. Bad. Awful. Sorry, even.

But... the past is the past. THIS time, I think I got it right. (And I don't have any teams playing in more than one bowl!)

So... without further ado... my updated bowl game projections for games played through November 22, 2008.

Here is a breakdown of the bowl situation for each conference.

Tie Breakers are listed if ties remain after head to head.

ACC: 8 Bowl Slots, Plus 1 BCS slot

Eligible: 8 - Florida State, Wake Forest, Maryland, Boston College, North Carolina, Virgina Tech, Miami (FL), Georgia Tech
Needs 1 win: 2 - Clemson, Virginia, NC State
Eliminated: 1 - Duke

Projected: +0. Any number from 8-11 is possible. They will likely have 9 eligible teams.

Coastal:
If Virginia Tech beats Virginia they will go to the championship game, otherwise Georgia Tech will go.

Atlantic:
If Boston College beats Maryland they will go to the championship game, otherwise FSU will go.

Big 10: 6 Slots, plus 1 BCS slot
Eligible: 7 - Michigan State, Penn State, Ohio State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Iowa, Wisconsin
Eliminated: 4 - Michigan, Indiana, Purdue, Illinois

Projected: ...

Big 12 could have 3 BCS teams.

The BCS has conviened to determine what happens if a conference has two teams #1 and #2, neither of whom are the conference champion. It had been my assumption that the two teams per conference rule would prevail, but the BCS has ruled that all three would get an automatic BCS bid.

The scenario is as follows:
Florida and Alabama both lose a game, either Florida losing to FSU then beating Alabama or Alabama losing to Auburn then beating Florida. (Florida losing to the Citadel is about as remote as Utah making the NC game.)

Oklahoma beats Texas Tech, who remains ahead of USC and Utah (who may jump USC with a win over BYU). Missouri then wins the Big 12 championship game.

The team Missouri beat, likely Oklahoma as they could pass Texas after a second win ...

Conference Preview

Miami and Virginia Tech are gone and Connecticut is in, leaving just 7 teams this year.  Next year Boston College leaves and Temple is being evicted.  Louisville, Cincinnati and South Florida join next year bringing it back to eight, albeit a much weakened 8.  This leaves an opening for some teams who have been consistently losing the Big East's BCS slot to Miami and Virginia Tech.  But make no mistake about it, this is a league in trouble.  The Big East is in danger of being regarded as a mid major rather than one of the big boys if some team doesn't step it up and assert itself.  The league has 6 bowl deals and most likely will be unable to fill all it's slots this year.

2004 Football Previews
#34 - Connecticut Huskies
The Huskies are starting to build a great program and the recruiting class this year was a sign of the direction this football team is going. With Miami (Fla.) and Virginia Tech gone in 2004 and Boston College gone in 2005, the timing to establish themselves as an elite program could not be better. This team is out to prove the 9-3 mark in 2003 was no fluke and this year they hope to get a bowl birth....more

#35 - Boston College Eagles
This will be the final year for the Eagles in the Big East before they bolt for the ACC in 2005, a move that will give the ACC 12 teams and the right to host a conference Championship Game. This team has a few areas where they need help and are a question mark but the offensive and defensive lines are so good that they could end up winning the Big East in 2004....more

Pittsburgh Panthers 2004 Preview
Walt Harris will defiantly earn his paycheck this year as coach of the Panthers. Harris saw a lot of talent leave the school after last season but he should get a break with a weakened division for 2004 allowing him to retool for the future....more

Rutgers Scarlet Knights 2004 Preview
Rutgers looks like a team that could really make some noise in the Big East once some of the heavyweights drop by the wayside. If the defense holds up this team could be very good and surprise more than just Syracuse....more

Syracuse Orangemen 2004 Football Preview
This is a big year for Syracuse but they don’t have a quarterback on their roster with a completed pass in their college careers. Syracuse can run the ball effectively but they need to establish balance on offense to keep opposing defenses honest. This team should finish right around .500 like a year ago....more

Temple Owls 2004 Preview
This will be the final season for Temple in the Big East as they move to Independent status for 2005. This team can win some games with solid defensive play up front and a healthy dose of Walter Washington at quarterback both passing and running the football. Temple has yet to see a bowl game since the 1979 campaign and that will continue. I do see this team at least tripling their win total from a year ago…by tripling I mean going from one to at least three....more
