Big Ten Coverage on SportzNutz

SportzNutz 2006 Big Ten Football Preview

The Big Ten Conference is splintered into four distinctive groups. Ohio State stands alone as the only choice to win the league. Positions 2-4 have mixed opinions, with each team thought to have one significant flaw. Teams ranked 5 thru 9 could finish in any order according to the experts, with the Illini and Hoosiers thought of as basketball schools. With 8 returning quarterbacks, you have to believe better then average back-door potential exists if not an outright upsets in the right situation in the Big 10(11).

BCS Busting - Part IV

This, the final installment of this series, considers the ultimate BCS busting scenarios. While a team being accepted be a BCS league's expansion plans have been discussed ad nauseum, what would it actually take for an entire conference to make the jump and garner BCS automatic qualifier status? Obviously I am talking about the MWC here.

The BCS has given a glimpse of their athematical[sic] system for determining the BCS eligibility.

The conferences have developed athematical standards of performance which be applied to determine the number of conferences whose champions will automatically qualify for a BCS game after the 2008 and 2009 regular seasons. The champions of no fewer than five conferences and no more than seven conferences will have annual automatic berths.

The standards will be based ...

BCS Busting - Part III

Ok, with a BCS non AQ conference member likely to get in and two possibly able to get in, is it possible for one to get to the national championship game? This is the ultimate individual team BCS Busting accomplishment.

The team with the best chance, by far, is BYU. I refuse to seriously consider Utah's chances until after October 11th, the earliest point when they could be significant. What would it take for BYU to get to the title game? For starters the teams ahead of them would need to lose. Also several SEC, Big 12 and Big 10 teams would likely pass them as the season wears on. Here are the additional losses each team needs to fall below an undefeated BYU.

2 losses needed
Oklahoma
Alabama
LSU
Missouri
Texas
Penn State

1 loss needed
USC
Texas Tech
Georgia
Florida
Auburn
BCS Busting - Part II

With 9 potential BCS busters still lurking around one may ask what are the chances that 2 teams from outside the chosen leagues get in during the same year? While the rules only grant one guaranteed slot to the outsiders under certain situations, any team in the top 14 and 9 wins would be eligible for an at large bid.

Lets get one thing straight. No way is a BCS non AQ conference member getting the nod over an eligible BCS AQ conference member. This scenario considers the possibility that a second BCS non AQ conference member is the only eligible team left for the final BCS Bowl slot. While not the first time this has been brought up here at Fanblogs, the dominoes have fallen very well so far this year. Let us consider what is needed from various BCS factions.

BCS non AQ conference teams
They simply need to get 2 teams into the top 14. Most likely this would be one from the MWC and one from the WAC, ...

Oklahoma crowned King of the AP Poll

For those of you scoring at home, make note of Sunday, September 28, 2008.

That is the day that the Oklahoma Sooners became the undisputed king of the Associated Press college football poll.

This week's #1 ranking marks the 96th time that OU has been ranked #1 by the AP, breaking a previous tie with Notre Dame at 95 weeks.

ALL TIME AP COLLEGE FOOTBALL #1 RANKINGS

1. Oklahoma (96 weeks)
2. Notre Dame (95 weeks)
3. Ohio State (93 weeks)
4. USC (90 weeks)
5. Nebraska (70)
6. Miami (68)
7. Florida State (59)
8. Texas (42)
9. Michigan (34)
10. Alabama (31)

Also notable, the Sooners have been ranked in 666 of the 976 AP football polls since 1936, or 68.2% of the published polls all-time.

As per SoonerSports.com, ...

Who are the whiniest coaches in America?

The guys at FoxSports.com have assembled their list of the whiniest coaches in America. I don't think there are any surprises here.

10. Rich Brooks, Kentucky 9. Urban Meyer, Florida 8. Bob Stoops, Oklahoma 7. Mike Stoops, Arizona 6. Nick Saban, Alabama 5. Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State 4. Tommy Tuberville, Auburn 3. Les Miles, LSU 2. Rich Rodriguez, Michigan 1. Steve Spurrier, South Carolina

Anyone see a pattern in this list? Yeah... me neither.

Is any conference more invisible nationally than the MAC??

Who can ...

WVU fall = Win for Big East?

ESPN.com's Brian Bennett argues today that West Virginia's fall from grace represents a potential win for the Big East Conference.

Bennett's argument is that conferences (in general) are better off when there is not a single dominating team (or two) at the top. With WVU falling back to the pack, the Big East will be more competitive and offer up new opportunities within the conference.

Still, another Mountaineers championship might just reinforce the notion that the conference has one great program and a bunch of stiffs. Long term, the Big East would be better off if someone like South Florida, Connecticut or Cincinnati goes to the BCS this year. That team could then build off the exposure and experience to gain stature. (Assuming, of course, it plays well in the bowl game. I don't think Pittsburgh ...
