Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Coverage on SportzNutz

 NCAA Quick Hits

SportzNutz 2006 ACC Football Preview

ACC Coverage on SportzNutzThe biggest surprise comes from the fact one magazine actually predicted the Seminoles to finish second to Clemson. Seeing N.C. State below Wake Forest in the predicted standing is an eye-opener, not that it is unjustified. The Wolf Pack has only 10 returning starters, while the Demon Deacons have 18 returning starters back. Coach Chuck Amato could be in real trouble if this play out this way. No real surprise that most prefer Miami over Virginia Tech considering the talent by lost by the Hokies.

The Road to the ACC championship

You have to give it to the ACC. Not only does the conference lack a front-runner, the conference is so jumbled that there are as many as 16 possible permutations for the ACC championship game in Tampa. Good thing that ACC has a detailed football tie-breaker.

Here's a roadmap to how each of the ACC contenders can reach the championship game:

Atlantic Division

Maryland - Win out. Maryland holds or would hold all tie-breakers by winning out
Wake Forest - Win out and have 1 Maryland loss
FSU - Win out and have 1 Wake Forest loss
Boston College - Win out (BC would then hold tie-breaker in three way or two-way tie)

Coastal Division

Virginia Tech - Win out or lose to Miami & one Miami loss
Miami - Win out or beat VaTech to hold tie-breaker
UNC - Win out and one VaTech loss
Tigers interview Oklahoma DC Brent Venables

Citing reports from Rivals site Soonerscoop.com, The State is reporting that Oklahoma DC Brent Venables has interviewed for the vacant Clemson head football position.

According to reports by a pair of Rivals.com team sites, Phillips met with Venables about the Tigers' coaching vacancy on Tuesday. Phillips was spotted arriving at an Oklahoma City airport after 5 p.m., and flight records indicated Clemson’s plane was scheduled to leave Oklahoma City later in Monday night.

Venables was on Clemson AD Terry Don Phillips's radar last season when it was unclear if former coach Tommy Bowden may be leaving for the Arkansas opening. ...

What are Butch Davis's plans for 2009?

Amid rumors that the University of Tennessee is about to swoop in and sign Tarheels coach Butch Davis to a long-term deal, came this interesting non-denial from the Butchster himself.

"The long and short of it is, the administration and I are completely and firmly committed to building a championship football program at North Carolina," he told reporters a week ago. "My family and I are very happy in Chapel Hill."

Just my two cents: You can go ahead and add the words "today" and "for now" to the end of each sentence.

Davis's comments haven't gone unnoticed in ACC country, either.

J.P. Giglio from the News & Observer says Davis's future is "brighter than Tennessee" and runs down the ...

Conference Tie Breakers

What are the tie breakers for each conference? To list them all would take a great deal of space. Since they have a large degree similarities I can condense them somewhat. The conference tiebreakers are listed in order by capital letters. The key for these letters are as follows:

Key to tie breakers
A) Head to head among tied teams
B) Record against teams within the same division
C) Results vs opponents within the same division with the best record, repeated through the team with the worse record.
D) Common conference opponents
E) All non-division opponents
F) Results vs all conference opponents with the best record, repeated through the team with the worse record
G) BCS Standings
H) BCS standings, unless top two are within 5 rankings, then head to head of top two in the BCS standings.
I) Combined Record of non-division opponents
J) Eliminate the team with ...

TCU - UVa agree to home-and-home

Get ready, Virginia fans: That mighty BCS contender from Texas is coming to Scott Field in 2009.

TCU had been on my mind after learning earlier in the day that the Horned Frogs will be coming to Virginia in 2009.

The contracts will be signed shortly, but agreement has been reached.

I'm not sure about the origin of the TCU-UVa talks, but the Cavaliers would not visit TCU, located in Fort Worth, until 2011 at the earliest and probably not till 2012. The Cavaliers already have lengthy trip planned to Southern California for 2010.

TCU and Virginia last hooked up in the 1994 Independence Bowl - a 20-10 win for the Cavs.
