I choose to take some time off writing the Armchair QB. I wanted to come up with
something different for the offseason. Instead of writing about spring ball, the
latest transgressions of NCAA football players, I want to write about what is on
my mind these days. Without further adieu, here I go…
I watched parts of the 2009 NFL draft. The Detroit Lions took Georgia
quarterback Matthew Stafford first overall. The pick falls in line with the
“when in doubt, take a potential franchise quarterback” philosophy. At least the
Lions did not take a wide receiver. I wish Matthew Stafford well; he will need
it. To me, the draft pick that intrigued me the most is San Diego Chargers 4th
round selection, Vaughn Martin. Martin played at the University of Western
Ontario in London, Ontario Canada. Yes, Canada has a university football system.
As part of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (the CIS as it is known in
Canada), their university sport system is a fraction of what you might be
accustomed to. The level of football in the CIS is equal to Division 3 maybe
Division 2. Martin’s team, was the Vanier Cup finalist (the national
championship game in Canada) losing to Laval Rouge et Or 44-21. Vaughn Martin
stands 6’3, 331 pounds. At his pro day, he ran a sub 5.0 40 yard dash and bench
pressed 33 repetitions. I will be interested to see how he fares against
top-level competition.
When it comes to previewing the 2009 preseason poll, I would have Florida,
Oklahoma and Texas ranked 1, 2 and 3 respectively. At this point, I could not
tell you who would be ranked in the top 10.
I read recently about Chrysler filing for chapter eleven bankruptcy. In my
opinion, it is high time someone in the USA government took action. I applaud
President Barack Obama effort to date; he inherited a mess and his message of
fiscal responsibility and accountability is heard loud and clear. As for
Chrysler and other companies, let this be a clear message that perhaps companies
should invest some time looking into ways to make products that consumers would
purchase.

In other post bowl mortems:
According to si.com, Congress is pushing for changes to the Bowl Championship
Series system. Does Congress have more important things to worry about…for
instance, the economy, jobs, health care? Leave the changes to the BCS system to
those who want to see changes. The only change I want to see is FOX network
putting on better announcers for the BCS games. I thought the announcers they
had this year were not very good.
Enjoy the spring weather and I will see you next month.
