Florida deserves credit for beating Oklahoma 24-14 in the BCS championship game
that was played on January 8th in Miami, Florida. Neither team was
impressive in this game but, Oklahoma did not take advantage of three drives
inside the 20, which produced three turnovers. In football, that will cost you
each time. Tim Tebow, college football equal to president elect Barack Obama, in
terms of popularity and saviourism, was not that impressive. He threw a couple
of interceptions but made plays when he needed to. He has said that he is coming
back for his senior season.
I titled this column “One game, Two champions” because I feel Utah Utes deserve
equal consideration for claim to number one. The 31-17 dismantling of Alabama in
the Sugar Bowl—Utah jumped out to a 21-0 first quarter lead and held on for the
win. The Utes were quicker, faster, and hungrier than the Crimson Tide, who
looked like they were “hung over” from the Southeastern Conference Championship
game loss to Florida. I do not know how sportswriters overlook Utah’s 13-0
record. Utah did what was asked, win their game and do it in style. I know some
fans will say “Utah did not play anyone”. If people will use the “did not play
anyone card”, Florida’s schedule was light. The SEC is not what it is (contrary
to SEC fans who claim it is the toughest conference). Florida played “the
citadel”, and they have one loss.
What about Southern California? Do the Trojans have a legitimate beef? I say no
because, the Trojans have one loss. Second, The Trojans beat Penn State
38-24—halftime score was 31-7 for USC. I look at the second half, I say Penn
State won the second half 17-7. National championship caliber teams do not let a
team back in the game. I think USC took the second half off.

In other post bowl mortems:
I think the Big 10 conference should reevaluate football. Going 1-5 in bowl
games (their only win was Iowa over a South Carolina team that did not show
up). Big ten teams could not stop the passing game, spread offence, run
game. In short the Big 10 cannot play football, period.
I think there are too many bowl games. I could not get excited for the St.
Petersburg Bowl; neither did Memphis, who lost 41-14 to South Florida.
I think the BCS championship game should be the last bowl game played. I do
not understand the GMAC and International Bowl game should be played in
early January. Move those bowl games in the early part of the bowl schedule.
Finally, I release my final top 25 poll for 2008. I crown Utah the number one
team for 2008. The Utes earned this spot as a result of their 31-17 win. I put
Florida as the number 2 team. This marks the end of the 2008 season, starting in
February; I will have a monthly column.
