The Armchair Quarterback
December 12, 2008
The BCS Has Spoken: Florida vs. Oklahoma
The Florida Gators and Oklahoma Sooners will meet on January 8th in
Miami, Florida for the Bowl Championship Series national title game.
The Gators came back to defeat Alabama 31-20 in the Southeastern Conference
championship game. Oklahoma flattened the toothless Missouri Tigers 62-21 in the
Big 12 championship game.
The Gators fought off a tough Alabama squad. With the Crimson Tide leading 20-17
in the 4th quarter, the Gators, led by Tim Tebow, scored two
touchdowns to seal victory.
In the Big 12 championship game, Oklahoma delivered several knockout blows, and
Missouri could not keep pace. The closest it got to Missouri was 17-7 midway
through the second quarter.
The only thing left to decide was whether or not Oklahoma would score 60 points
for the fifth consecutive week.
In the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game; Virginia Tech beat Boston
College 30-12 due in part to the steady play of Hokie QB Tyrod Taylor. This game
was played in a half-full Raymond James Stadium.

Now that the BCS title game is set, the other BCS bowl parings have been
announced. Here they are:
Rose Bowl:
Penn State vs. Southern California
Sugar Bowl:
Alabama vs. Utah
Fiesta Bowl:
Ohio State vs. Texas
Orange Bowl:
Virginia Tech vs. Cincinnati
At first glance, I see a peculiar Orange Bowl match-up between the Hokies and
Bearcats. To me, the Hokies are known to be bowl busts. Will Alabama be mentally
prepared after their SEC championship collapse?
I think the Fiesta Bowl is a match-up between an undeserving Ohio State squad
(Yes, I know the BCS rules about not having 2 “mid-major teams) and Texas.
I am sure the Rose Bowl folks are happy that they get the Big 10 vs. Pac 10
match-up. I hope it is not a blow out like last year. Other bowl games to pay
attention to is noted below:
Alamo Bowl:
Northwestern vs. Missouri
Holiday Bowl:
Oregon vs. Oklahoma State
Sun Bowl:
Pittsburgh vs. Oregon State
Cotton Bowl:
Texas Tech vs. Mississippi
In the coming weeks, I will provide a preview of most of the bowl games. Next
week column will feature my All-American team and my choice for this year’s
Heisman trophy recipient.
