The Armchair Quarterback

June 3, 2008

Summer School

By the time I am finished writing this column, the calendar will say June.  For some high school seniors, they decide to enroll in their college to begin preparations for the 2008 college football season. Some coaches feel that this will help them to become competitive for fall drills. I want to discuss the hot topics that have developed, specifically the BCS, Ryan Perrilloux and other things.

The authorities nixed the idea of having a “plus one” playoff format. A “plus one” format will entail four teams that will compete for the national championship once the bowl games are completed.

According to Stewart Mandel of SI.com, the rationale behind nixing this idea was that it would “take too long” to finish the season. I want to be realistic, this decision is about the almighty dollar and the exposure the current BCS system creates on national sports talk shows, bloggers, internet chat rooms and this column. It is about the money.

In my opinion, having the plus-one system masquerade as a playoff system.  It is not a true playoff because only four teams make it. Not once it was discussed, what methods will be used to determine the four teams. I get the impression it was hastily put together to appease the growing angst that a major NCAA sport like football, does not have a legitimate playoff system.

If you are a parent, teacher, coach or someone who works with young people, you might be able to relate. Les Miles, head coach of the BCS champion LSU Tigers, dismissed talented but undisciplined QB Ryan Perrilloux for repeated violations of team rules.

According to a report from ESPN.com, Perrilloux was repeatedly missing team workouts, academic classes and running afoul with the law. The last straw came from a failed drug test.

I read many accounts criticizing Miles for offering Perrilloux many chances to turn his academic and football career around. Although I am not a parent, I have worked with young people. I am sure readers know that you give young people opportunity after opportunity to turn things around. It hurts to see a talented player like Perrilloux throw away a chance that many would nearly take the shirt of their back to have a sniff.

I would applaud Les Miles for the way he handled this situation. According to college football talk.com, Perrilloux is talking to Jacksonville State. I do not want to wish ill will towards Perrilloux; I hope he can turn things around.

You could be watching three more bowl games this season. Bowl organizers have made presentations to have bowl games played in Washington DC, Salt Lake City, Utah and St. Petersburg, Florida. The names are as follows, followed by potential bowl matchup:

Congressional Bowl Washington DC (Navy vs. ACC opponent)

Rocky Mountain Bowl, Salt Lake City, Utah (Mountain West Conference vs. Western Athletic Conference).

St. Petersburg Bowl (Big East Conference vs. Conference USA)

Should these three games get approval, it would bring the total to thirty-five games. That means 70 teams that need to have at least six wins will be playing in a bowl. I feel we have too many bowl games, which rewards mediocrity. I feel bowl games has its place, I would love to see an emphasis put on as a reward for a good season. After all, 6-6 teams do not belong in bowls in the first place.

I am eagerly awaiting the release of the 2008 college football annuals that will hit the newsstands very soon. See you next time.
