Florida
routs Ohio State 41-14 in BCS
Championship Game, but who is the real
champion?
Recap: It started out great
for Ohio State, and ended up not even
close. Florida owned the field it wasn't
supposed to be on, embarrassing Heisman
Trophy winner Troy Smith and No. 1 Ohio
State 41-14 on Monday night to run away
with the defacto national championship.
Ted Ginn took the opening kickoff 93
yards on the first play of the game, and
Ohio State and their fans thought they
were in business. But, given 51 days to
prepare, and favored by a solid
touchdown, the Buckeyes were confused
from the get-go once Florida got the
ball.
Chris Leak and Tim Tebow showed off
coach Urban Meyer's twin quarterback
system to perfection as the No. 2 Gators
became the first Division I school to
hold football and basketball titles at
the same time.
Florida proved once again that speed
kills, and that this BCS championship
matchup would have been a much better
game with a certain undefeated team vs.
Florida. The best argument for an and 1
playoff we will ever see.
The Buckeyes looked completely
flummoxed by Florida's frenetic offense
at the outset. Trying to match up with
the Gators' shifting formations, they
often jumped around at the line and
still were out of position.
Now, only one question remains:
What about Boise State? Playing on
the very same field where the undefeated
Broncos stunned Oklahoma in the Fiesta
Bowl on New Year's Day, Florida (13-1)
routed the previously unbeaten Buckeyes
(13-1) leaving Boise State as the only
undefeated Division 1 team.
So Florida is the defacto national
championship team. We say that no team
can lay claim to that title any more
than undefeated Boise State.
Until it can be decided on the field
we are going to have to abstain from
declaring a national champion this year.
Let's hope the AP voters have the
intestinal fortitude to throw this up in
the air. For some reason we doubt it.
