Baseballs Amazing Statistical Innovator

The 2008 Major League Baseball season is officially underway, and it is ironic that an obscure statistician from Kansas is making the news, one who was ridiculed for many years. Today he is a chief decision-maker for the world champion Boston Red Sox, having gaining notoriety throughout professional sports - and acceptance to his metrics continues to grow...more

MLB Insider: Nothing Could Be Finer Than

Knowing you have a $14.5 million dollar man in the bullpen to help you – especially when he’s not doing it as a starter.  What are the odds that Barry Zito will find his way out of troubles coming out of the bullpen anytime soon?.... more

Thinking Out Loud: The Wacky World of the Steinbrenner’s
By Ted Fleming, Tampa Bay Sports Net

Answer me this? How am I to explain Hank Steinbrenner to my grandchildren?

It's bad enough that I raised a son who became a Yankee fan - it was a Mets' household until I moved to Florida to join BaysBall Nation, and the so-called smart one of the twins went to the dark side (of New York blue) - but what's up with the new mouth of the north?

It appears for all all intents and purposes the little Hankie has all of his father's mouth but not the sense of his brother Hal, the Quiet Man, a dozen years his junior.

Not one month into the season the team's co-chairman effectively called his new manager an idiot.... more

Speaking of Sports:  Has The Rays' Disney Experience Run Its Course?

The Rays have been looking to expand their fan base but is Orlando and Port Charlotte overextending their reach? Ownership is going Star Trek, going where others have not yet attendance at Champion Stadium Tuesday was less than desirable... more

Up Close and Personal – Rocco Baldelli Interview
Interview By: Althea Pashman

Rocco Baldelli’s health is one of the biggest question marks the Rays have this spring.  He appeared in only 127 of 486 games the past three seasons because of an assortment of injuries.  Baldelli has been a major disappointment since signing a long-term deal in November 2005 and there was much hoopla as to why the team would make such a commitment to someone who had just missed the entire 2005 from a torn ACL and a torn rotator cuff.  Heading into spring training, the Rays have asked Baldelli to pace himself during spring training, something that Baldelli has never had to do..... complete interview

FemmeFan Weekly: On the Beaten Path: Female Sports Writers Still Struggle For Fair Play
By Jessica Quiroli

On April 2nd 1975 Commissioner of Baseball Bowie Kuhn sent out a letter he wrote to the general managers of all major league baseball teams, rallying them to maintain a “unified stand” against allowing female sports writer’s into major league clubhouses.... more

Hurdles Aside, How Will Rays’ Stadium Plan Really Affect St. Petersburg
By Ted Fleming, Tampa Bay Sports Net

There are logistical problems. Parking problems. Ecological problems. IRL problems. Government problems. Voter problems. Problem problems.

Other than that, the Rays new stadium idea is fabulous.

Or is it?

Part of the $1 billion project depends not only the sale of the stadium and land where Tropicana Field currently rests to pay off roughly $100 million in bonds, but who will develop it and how.... more

Could It Be Back to the Future in Rays Quest For New Downtown Stadium?
By Ted Fleming, Tampa Bay Sports Net

It was an accident. Really.

I just had a chunk of my house painted recently and as I was trying to reconstruct the displays I had from the early days of the Devil Rays, I had something in a pile I wanted to frame but never got around to it..... more

A Fan Speaks Out

"The Heckler" on a Fan Speaks Out:  An Interview With Jim Hendry

With the Cubs on the brink of the playoffs, Jim Hendry wears the hero crown again. But the last two years, with the team a big disappointment, he wore the goat horns, asking why he didn’t do more to improve the club. In this interview, he addresses the issue if his hands were tied by Andy MacPhail, just what Alfonso Soriano was promised when the Cubs signed him, his thoughts on Lou Piniella, and what player surprised him this year.... more

FemmeFan Weekly: Renel Brooks-Moon, Raising The Bar

Needless to say I was excited to have the opportunity to speak with a woman who is “setting the standard” for women who aspire for a career in sports broadcasting.
Renel, as she is known in the San Francisco Bay Area is a local girl.

She was born and raised in Oakland California, graduated from Woodside High School and Mills College.
Renel’s broadcasting career with KCBS and KFRC led to an on-air personality gig on 106 KMEL as part of the “Morning Zoo”.
Renel's sports broadcasting journey began as host of “Sports In The Classroom”, a weekly high school sports education show, and host of “A’s Inside Pitch”, a weekly magazine series during the Oakland A’s 1995 Season.
In 2000, Renel was honored to be chosen by the San Francisco Giants as the Public Address Announcer for SBC Park (now named AT&T Park)... more

The Rays Corner with Althea Pashman

Starting Rotation Set for Now… Longoria Sent To Durham

Losing Scott Kazmir from the rotation to start the season put a minor kink into manager Joe Maddon’s plans.  The kink of course pushed the No’s 2-3 starters James Shields and Matt Garza up one position, leaving not two holes to fill (No’s 4 and 5), but now three.  Andy Sonnanstine and Edwin Jackson along with Jeff Niemann, J.P. Howell and Jason Hammel were competing for the final three spots... more

Another Season Of Mediocrity Hovers Over Arlington in 2008

It’s time for the pre-season predictions for our Texas Ranger baseball team.  We have seen another off-season of acquiring new players and a few trades to boot.  What does it mean for the fans who will be rooting for their hometown heroes?  Unfortunately, it looks like more of the same from a team that hasn’t found a way to be a contender this century.... more
