The New York Giants
defied doubters and the odds last season, getting hot late in the year and
riding that momentum to a stunning Super Bowl title despite entering the NFC
playoffs as the fifth seed.
The Giants should see something very familiar in this year's Philadelphia
Eagles. New York opens the playoffs Sunday with a divisional-round game against
the red-hot Eagles, who despite being the last seed in the conference, should
pose a formidable challenge...more

San Diego's defense
hung tough when threatened by the Pittsburgh Steelers in November. That type of

Melrose Place Replaced, Devil’s Dilemma, Injuries, Rumors etc. If you
recall, the Tampa Bay Lightning were the most active team in the
off-season. It was no secret that new owners Oren Koules and Len Barrie
would be active in free agency; they said so during their introduction to
the Tampa Bay media in June.
Being
extremely active in free agency wasn’t something that Tampa Bay had done in the
past as prior ownership put a lock on spending. Being active via trades was
mostly done at the trade deadline for help at a post-season run or shedding
salary as in last year’s case of the Brad Richards trade to Dallas....

Selig has been overseeing Major League Baseball as it’s commissioner since 1992
albeit for the first six years under the terms as “acting.” He oversaw baseball
through the strike of 1994, the introduction of the wild card, interleague play
and the merging of the National and American Leagues under the Office of the
Commissioner. Selig was also instrumental in organizing the World Baseball
Classic in 2006 and the introduction of revenue sharing. He is credited for the
financial turnaround of baseball during his tenure with a 400 percent increase

The Armchair Quarterback: The “Bore” Games
I want to
congratulate Sam Bradford for winning the 2008 Heisman Trophy. Bradford is a
junior and as of this writing, he has not said publicly that he will enter the
2009 NFL Draft.
After watching the
Detroit Lions (who have the first overall pick), go 0-16, perhaps it would be
wise for Bradford, Matt Stafford, Tim Tebow and their ilk to stay on campus for
another year. With the foolishness in Detroit comparable to a bad business being
run, I would stay in school. The NFL will not shut down overnight....more

Jim Furyk carries himself with a quiet
intensity. He is a driven, consistent,
excellent player who has proven his
meddle over the course of his career.
When he clinched the Ryder Cup for the
United States on Sunday, though, Furyk
became emotionally effusive. In
speaking with NBC Sports about what it
meant to be the man to clinch the first
USA victory in nine years and three
tries, Furyk choked up with tears. He
said that he knew he would even after
having several minutes to celebrate and
appreciate the moment with his team and
the fans. After having been pasted in
each of the last three cups – and being
in the losing match in 2002 – Furyk was
overwhelmed to regain the Ryder Cup....

Speaking

Speaking of Sports: TRS: The Real
Story Behind the Garza-Navarro Meeting The Tampa Bay Sports Net has in its possession the
conversations between Rays’ pitcher Matt Garza and catcher Dioner Navarro on
the mound, when Garza got a close-up look at what Navarro wears on his face,
in the dugout when they met again and in the runway leading to the visitor’s
clubhouse.
Without anyone’s knowledge, a
miniature microphone was cleverly embedded in the catcher's mask padding and
every word was heard across the Gulf of Mexico (when you are in an area
loaded with 1,000-5,000 watt radio stations, you know you can hear them
further out in the water to the west than you do over land to the east).
So without further adieu, TBSN brings
you the complete blow-by-blow from start to finish.

Thinking Out Loud: Going To Hell In
a Handbasket Almost a month ago I penned a piece about the entertainment at Tropicana
Field – (Rays Missing a Beat on In-house Fun) - and how the departure of
John Franzone, a.k.a John the Maestro, has left a huge void inside the
stadium.
Having been inside the House of the Tilted Roof this entire homestand, there
has been something else that has been gnawing at me but I just couldn't put
my finger on it until Sunday's homestand finale with the White Sox....

Ben Gordon continues to be lost in limbo as training
camp approaches. The Bulls will likely sign him to a one year tender offer
but he doesn’t want to sign with them and would like to be traded to a team
like the Heat. There have been discussions but if that leads anywhere is up
to the Heat/Bulls to decide.
As mentioned last week in this article, the free
agents that are getting signed right now are the guys that are restricted
free agents that would fit best with the team they have been with. ...

NBA Age Limit - A Blessing in

The 2007 NBA draft class was the most hyped and highly covered
of any draft class in the last five years and maybe even this
decade - and 9 of the 10 first picks were still teenagers.
Something very profound has occurred in the NBA in the past two
years due in large part to the new rule that disallows any high
school student from entering the NBA draft until they are 19
years old...more
