Upon Further Review

June 10, 2008

Welcome to the latest edition of “Upon Further Review”, it’s the dead period for football and their fans.  Sure there’s OTA’s and mini-camps and all that stuff, but how exciting are those things really?  Guys wearing shorts, no contact, veterans not doing much other than stretching and running and having to watch rookies and guys not good enough to make the final roster practice.  Talk about a snooze fest. BUT, the fact of the matter is it all means football, real football, is creeping ever closer and that’s cause for excitement in itself.  With all that said, let’s take a look at some of the happenings from around the NFL recently, shall we?

  • Chad Johnson says he plans on showing up at Bengals camp as early as June and, now, all seems rosy in Bengal Country. That is until the games start and Ocho Cinco sees that porous defense of the Bengals... by the way wasn’t there a time when Marvin Lewis was considered a defensive genius?... giving up yardage and points like they’re going out of style. Then the rose colored glasses will come off and he’ll be back to insulting the organization and we all can just sit back and enjoy the implosion. (I spoke too soon...  things just got rocky again in Bengal land with the indefinite suspension of Odell Thurman. Did anyone really think this guy was going to be able to stay “clean” enough to actually play football again?)

  • Speaking of the Bengals... Peter Warrick has been cut, but not by an NFL team.  Nope, instead, he was cut by a CFL team.  Oh how the mighty has fallen... wait, was he ever really considered mighty?  This draft bust ranks right up there with David Klingler (sorry again Bengal fans) and Ryan Leaf.

  • When will the lofty status the New England Patriots have gained over the years finally come to an end?  First there’s the whole Spygate thing... don’t even get me started talking about cheatin’ Bill Belichick... and now there’s offensive lineman Nick Kaczur being arrested in April for illegal possession of a powerful painkiller.  He then, apparently, cooperates with federal agents in a sting to bust his supplier.  Of course, he denies helping the feds.  But, nothing and I mean nothing is really written or said about it.  Maybe a few blurbs here and there but not much.  If this was another player on another team this story would’ve been talked about more.  But the fact remains the NFL LOVES the Patriots and they are trying to squelch and/or brush under the rug any and all negative stories about the Patriots, their poster franchise.

  • Cedric Benson is arrested for the second time in a month... isn’t he playing on the wrong team?  Shouldn’t he be a Bengal?

  • Jeremy Shockey has said he may miss Giants minicamp.  What?!  A veteran missing minicamp?!  Someone call ESPN, CNN, FOX and any other news agency!  The world is coming to an end!

Finally...

  • Lets end on a positive note... Darren McFadden has signed a 6-year, $60 million contract with the Oakland Raiders assuring that he’ll be in camp on time and able to gel with the offense and mainly JaMarcus Russell.  That can only be a good thing for Raider Nation.
