We all knew it was going to happen. We just didn't think it would be in the first year of the BCS series. Florida beat Ohio State in last nights BCS "national title" game. Just one problem, they weren't supposed to win and throw the whole thing into doubt.
What about Boise State? That's the refrain being heard throughout the West at least, and if we are intellectually honest as fans, we have to ask ourselves that question. Boise State is the only unbeaten division one team in the country and they beat a top ten team to win in their bowl game to do so.
We can talk about conferences all day long, but one simple fact remains. Only one team went through the entire season taking on all comers and came out of it unscathed. Does this mean that Boise State would beat Florida? No probably not. The way Florida played, there are some NFL teams that would have lost to them yesterday. The thing is we will never know and that is an unacceptable outcome to the season. Imagine if the NFL stopped playing after the NFC and AFC Championship games. That is effectively the situation in college football this year.
It's not as if a case can't be made for Boise
State.
Boise State outscored their opponents by an average margin of
39.4-15.6 for a net point differential of 23.8
Florida outscored its opponents 28.8-13.5 for a net point
differential of 15.3
When you start looking at the numbers and realize that Florida's numbers include a 62-0 route of Western Carolina and 42-0 over UCF, not exactly powerhouse scheduling for all you WAC bashers out there.
The truth of the matter is that not only did Florida lose to Auburn, they also almost lost to Tennessee (21-20) and almost lost to South Carolina at home (17-16) neither of which are much cause for concern, but they also only beat Vanderbilt by 6 points (25-19)
Meanwhile Boise State pretty much dominated everyone they played. Only the Oklahoma game was close, the only other team to come near them was a 23-20 win over San Jose State on the road.
When you look at the overall stats the teams are very even. Wouldn't it be nice to see them play each other to find out just who the better team is?
| Boise State Stats Summary | ||||
| Team Statistics | Pts | Yds | Rush | Pass |
| Offense | 39.4 | 424.3 | 222.8 | 201.4 |
| Defense | 15.6 | 273.8 | 82.0 | 191.8 |
| Florida Stats Summary | ||||
| Team Statistics | Pts | Yds | Rush | Pass |
| Offense | 28.8 | 398.1 | 160.3 | 237.8 |
| Defense | 13.5 | 268.8 | 74.5 | 194.3 |
The truly sad thing is that this is completely unnecessary. There is a simple way to have playoffs, involve all the bowl teams and everyone gets to make a lot of money and we never again would have to wonder what would have been.
Check out the Savant's College Playoff System™ Its simple, direct, and to the point.
This season, until it can be decided on the
field we are going to have to declare Boise State as the
national champion of the people this year. Let's hope the AP
voters have the intestinal fortitude to throw this up in the
air. For some reason we doubt it.
