Is it just me or have NBA writers
gotten really whiny as of late. The NBA
used to suck. Those that think it still
does are not paying attention.
This is more of what we west of the Mississippi like to call “East Coast
Bias”, We pretend it doesn’t exist, but its apparent that most sports writers
think the NBA Western Conference just doesnt exist. The games being played out
west with the Suns, Mavericks, Lakers, and yes, even the Clippers most
definitely do not “suck”.
Those games are reserved for the Eastern division and since of the 6 stories
on the NBA front page of Sportznutz today all of them basically say that
basketball sucks these guys are just not watching the right games. Gee, can’t
any of these people stay up past 8 p.m.
Here are excerpts from just some of these articles…
From
Flagrant Fouls…
The refs have been dreadful and the networks appear to have
been instructed by the NBA to show support for the refs by agreeing with 99.999%
of the calls.
From
The Jesters Quart…
We can pretend that the
NBA is better when it’s a team sport and not centered around the megastars, but
then we’d just be kidding ourselves. We really don’t care about the Pistons or
the Spurs or the Suns. We care about Shaq and Wade. We care about Dirk and Mark
Cuban. We care about personality; we don’t care about boxing out on a rebound,
or how good the seventh man off the Detroit bench is. This is a star league,
it’s always been a star league, and the only time it doesn’t work is when the
stars aren’t really stars.
From
NBA Roundup…
Okay, so I’ve been very delinquent in updating this column… fire me, sue me
but the bottom line is that the NBA has lost me as a fan. Maybe this is my way
of protesting the NBA? Who knows… but it drives me crazy seeing a bunch of
grown up men carry on like a bunch of spoiled little kids if they things don’t
go their way or they don’t get what they want.
I could go
on, but what is the point? I have to ask myself what games are these people
watching? We can all nitpick the refereeing (Just ask Mark Cuban), or lament the
lack of superstars, or find something to complain about, but must we all be Jim
Rome? Has sports writing really become nothing more than finding the most
negative things we can say about anything. All of this is at the expense of the
excitement level of the games that is finally back? Can anyone write anything
positive anymore.I, like many of you, quit watching basketball after
Michael’s retirement. Living here in the desert southwest these last few years
though I have been gradually exposed to a new breed of basketball played at a
different pace, with a different style, and it’s starting to take hold across
the NBA.Maybe some of these writers should try staying up past 8pm at some point
and see what the rest of the country is seeing. This game is becoming great
again, stay up and enjoy the ride.
Lastly, on a totally off topic note, do you think the Toronto Star
appreciates the irony of this headline: “Williams
has Argos buzzing.”
