Today, MLB announced that it will will investigate alleged steroid use
by Barry Bonds and other players with former Senate Majority Leader George
Mitchell leading the effort.
This is just silly, yes there is a book out on Barry Bonds, we all know
all about it. It’s silly because it would be difficult, if not impossible for
baseball to penalize anyone for steroid use prior to Sept. 30, 2002, when a
joint drug agreement between management and the players’ association took
effect.
So what exactly is the point of this investigation other than to drag
people through the muck. It’s nothing more than gloss to make it look like
baseball is doing something.
I hate the fact that players probably used steroids in the past, but
the fact remains that although it may be distasteful and dishonest it was within
the rules set forth by baseball prior to that date. Next we will be going back
and investigating the use of amphetamines in the 70’s and 80’s.
Hell, Gaylord Perry who was one of my childhood heroes is a famous
cheater. Should we change the recordbooks because he cheated? There has to be
a line of demarcation and we clearly have one here. This is starting to look
like the Salem witch trials. If you can catch Bonds now, by all means throw the
book at him. Otherwise leave him the hell alone.
