While everyone believed
that the number one ranked Texas Longhorns were the favorites to win Saturday
night against their rivals number seven ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders, the game
did not go according to plan, well, not for the Longhorns. From the start of the
first quarter, the Longhorns struggled both on offense and defense. The offense
could barely get a first down the entire first half. And while quarterback Colt
McCoy tried to keep his team energized and enthused on the sidelines, each time
they came onto the field, the Longhorns lacked that fervent attitude that had
kept them at the top spot for so long in the BCS standings.
Colt
McCoy did throw a couple of touchdowns, and it seemed for most of the game that
he was the only person on the team that was actually playing football. The rest
of the Longhorns stumbled, horribly. Missing passes, dropping passes, not
converting on numerous third down possessions, the offense looked tired. The
defense was worse, allowing Texas Tech to score touchdown after touchdown, with
the final touchdown coming in the last eight seconds of the fourth quarter to
win them the game.
The Longhorns did come
out stronger after halftime, but still looked like a miss-guided team. They did
not look strong; they lacked passion and initiative, and were ultimately
dethroned from that number one position that they had held for so long. Maybe
being ranked number one is not such a good thing after all; the previous number
one ranked teams have all fallen once they hit that sought after spot. Oklahoma,
USC, Ohio State, they have all fallen when ranked number one, and now, Texas has
done the same. Maybe Penn Sate or Alabama will be different when one of them
will surely take over as the number one ranked team in the nation. Oklahoma,
Florida and USC had fantastic wins this weekend, and quarterbacks Tim Tebow and
Sam Bradford will probably move up as frontrunners over Colt McCoy for the
Heisman after this devastating loss.
And while the Longhorns
did have the lead in the last few minutes of the game, the defense could not
hold Texas Tech, and allowed them to score a touchdown giving them the victory.
The only player besides the kicker and Jordan Shipley that actually played a
good game was McCoy. Although this was not one of his best games, I have seen
him play so much better, he is still only one person, and cannot be the entire
team. There is no I in team, but after last night’s game, there certainly was.
McCoy did the best job he could with what he had to work with, and that was not
much. What happened to the rest of the team? Colt McCoy got sacked so many
times; he was lucky he was not badly injured.
Where was that great and
powerful offense and defense that had beaten previous teams in the past few
weeks? Longhorns, you need to definitely regroup. You need to stop thinking and
start playing football again. Mainly, you need to follow your quarterback’s
lead, and get in there and play with fire and passion burning through your
veins. If the blood is not pumping hard, and the adrenaline is not giving you
that ultimate rush, then you are not meeting expectations, let alone surpassing
them!
